Death of Cbas. D. liclver.
Dr. Ghas. D. M elver, who was
president of the State Normal at
Greensboro, died suddenly Mon
day afternoon at 4:40. The de
ceased was one of the party on
the Bryan special train. -The
train had left Durham but a short
time, on its way to Greensboro,
when Dr, Mclver complained of
an attack of acute indigestion.
State Treasurer Lacy was seated
by his side, when Dr, Mclver
turned to him and said "call a
doctor, I am desperately ill,"
Mr. Lacy at once called for help,
and Walter Murphy, of this 'city,
A. D. Watts, of Statesville, and
P. D. Gold, of Greensboro, has
tened to his assistance. They
laid the stricken man on the seat
but he died almost instantly.
Dr, Jones of Hillsboj1, who was
on the train, reached the dying
man as quickly as he could but
Dr. Mclver was already beyond
human aid.
Negroes Sies for Daaiges.

Fuller Potter, colored, have insti
tuted proceedings against "the
Southern Railway Company, and
the Southern Bell Telephone
Company, oh account of the kill
ing of Porter at Spencer last Feb
ruary Porter was literally burn
ed alive by an electric wire dang
ling frorri a polo on one of the
principal streets. Damages in the
amount of $5,000 are wanted.
Porter's life was insured for $1,000,
and it is learned action will be
brought to force settlement it
being alleged by.the company that
he was killed by a voluntary act
of taking hold of the wire, thus
invalidating the policy. Char

Ohio Don't Want Bryan.
The Democratic leaders of the
State have requested William J.
Bryan to stay out of Ohio during
the fall campaign. They fear
that the Nebraskan's radical views
may jeopardize tne party's suc
cess in the State, but excuse their
action with the announcement
that the campaign will be devot
ed to State issues, and hence the
peerless leader's aid will not be
necessay.
It was on Thursday last that
Mr. Bryan in Cincinnati declared
that he would devote several days
this fall stumping Ohio, visiting
Ciccinnati, Cleveland, Toledo,
Columbus and the close congres
sional districts. The Democratic
candidates for congress, it was
learned today, held a meeting at
the Chittenden Hotel here yester
day and decided it would be un
wise to bring Bryan into Ohio
this campaign. Their decision
was unanimous, and Harvey L
Garber, chairman of the "Demo
cratic Stats committee, was dele
gated to notify Bryan of the ac
tion. Brvan now save he will
come when wanted.
Ohio is the frst State in the
Union to notify Bryan that his
ervices were not desired. The
action is significant in view of the
sentiment of the rank and file of
of the party for Bryan before the
latter returned from his trip

Suicide in Guilford.

Walter Matthews, white man
aged about 25 years and residing
at Deep Kiver, committed suicide
bv hancine himself. Goine to
his room fin the back of the house,
he tied a plow line 4o the rafters
and then around his neck, lump
ing to his death. He was found
about an hour later! No note or
anything;was left to throw light
on the suicide. Matthews has been
hard of hearing for some time and
lately had become almost deaf.
He was a young man of rather
peculiar disposition and, on being
aroused, i was almost unmanage
able. Saturday afternoon he en
gaged in; a quarrel with a negro,
who strudk him in the face. This

so angered the young man that he
secured hjis gun and would have
killed the negro had he not been
restrained. Fear that he would
be arrested, coupled with other
things which he brooded over,
probably caused him to commit

Heath ot a Newspaper Man.'

Claude! A. Matthews, city edi
tor of the Charlotte News for a
number of years, died at Aehe-
ville last Thursday where he had
gone to recuperate his shattered
health. Mr. Matthews was one
of the best known newspaper men
of the State, and was very highly
esteemed by those who knew him.
His death is a distinct loss to
to the newspaper with which he
was connected so long, and for
which he labored bo faithfully
and so intelligently. He leaves a
widow and one child.
Jones has Been Located.
Willie- A. Jones, the missing
Hope Mills bank cashier, has at
last beon located and all rumors
heretofore in circulation as to his
whereabout are set at rest. J. S.
Jones, of Red Springs, father of
the missing young man, writes
the bank officials that he has at
last heard from his son. He re
ceived a letter from him yester-p
day dated Petersburg, Va. In ex
planation of his strange conduct
young Jones says that he .went to
Richmond, intending to return in
time to be at-the bank Tuesday
morning after 1 the legal holiday
Monday, but that he got left in
Richmond and fearing that he
would be dischareed from his
place at the bank, sought anoth
er job. He obtained a position
as telegraph operator for the Nor
folk and Western at Petersburg,

The grand jury today returned
indictments against the directors
of the Milwaukee Avenue State
Bank, of which Paul O. Stensland
is president. The indictment
charges embezzlement and name,
various amounts ranging from
$50, to $1,000. The directors are :
M. A. Labuy, Frank Crane,
Joseph Lister, Elof Johnson and
Marcus Kirkeby. Additional
indictments were returned against
Stensland and Henry W Herring,
the former cashier of the bank.
