H. S. Duval, soliciting freight
agent of the Southern, is in re
ceipt of a circular from the A,
T. and iS. F. Railroad,. wh;ch
shows what a demand there is for
labor in San Francisco,. Wages
are enormous and ' laborers are
pouring into the Golden Gate
City by the thousands. The de
mand ia so much greater than the
supply that the railroad com
panies are scattering these circur
lars broadcast over the country,
hoping thereby to induce others
to go to the relief of the stricken
city. Appended to the paper is
the call of the State labor com
missioner, W. V. Stafford, for
more men in the building trades.
Steady- employment is guaran
teed alLthrough the winter sea2
son, when cold weather has prac
tically discontinued building ope
rations in the east.
Tbe schedule of wages on the
basis of an eight-hour day will be
of interest to mam in Charlotte.
It follows: Brick 'a y e r s, $7 ;
lathers, $6 ; plumbers, $6 ;w plas

carpenters, $4 to $7; stone cutters

The circular adds that the car

ing insignificant as compared
with the demand. The fruit

big crops. Chariot t. Observer.
Layer of the First Atlaptjc Cable.
The death is repdrled of Cap
tain Henry Augustus Moriarity.
one of the principals of the laying
of the first Atlantic cable.' The
captain was born in 1815 and en
fefed the navy in his early youth.
He was prominent in the Syrian
saval operations of 1840 and vr&4
master of a ship during the. Rub
sian war. But it was his work as
master of the. cable-laying ships
which obtained most recognition
for Capt. Moriarity. He com
manded H. M. S. Agammnbn,
which, with the U. S. frigate Ni
agara, laid the Atlantic cable in
1857, and spliced it in mid-ocean
It was a tremendous effort for a
little result. Only-a few mes
sages were transmitted when the
cable retired from business.
Though in his 92nd year Captain
Moriariaty Was quite active until
a few days before, his death.

Record Size Appendix.
What is, said to be the largest
.vermiform appendix ever taken
from a human being, was taken
yesterday from the body of Miss
Mary Kilshore, at the Norwgeian
hospital. It was six inches in
length, one inch in diameter at
one ' end an three-fourths of an
inch at the other. Miss Kil
shore was stricken a week ago and
since then has suffered great pain.
Br. Edward Day Ferris her
physician, advised her removal to
the hospital. Dr. Ferris was as
sisted by members of the hospi
tal faculty in performing the
op9ration. Difficulty in get
ting at the appendix was en
countered because of its size,
and when Dr.' Ferris realized the
extraordinary proportions of the
organ he was astonished. The pa
tient has excellent hopes of re
covery. New York Herald.
Ed. Davis Again.
Sheriff Julian has been noti
fied of the arrest of another ne
gro, supposed to be Ed; Davis.
The Sheriff recived another let
ter from an officer at Chattanoo
era. Term, in which he states he
believe he has the, genuine Ed.
Davis who is wanted for the mur
der of Conductor Wiggins. Tht
officer sent a photograph of the
negro under arrest. Sheriff Ju
lian will show the photograph to
persons who know Davis, and see
never be "civilized.". 'c
There's lots of "pious looking
faces" owned by hypocrites.
We'd rather have an honest
enemy than a hypocritical friend.
There's a: darn sight of differ
ence, between being "buzzy and
being "busy."
A "two-faced" man can never
look an honest man squarely in
the eye.
A fellow wi'h only "book
learning" is the most useless
"chs" on earth.
. If we had more men with
"push" and fewer with "pulls,'
this country would'nt have so
many rogues.
"Ignorance" is tickled to death
when permitted to loaf around
with some fellow whom the world
calls "wise."
Cut the word "love" out of the
English language, and you have
no: "life lioe" to toss a friend in
distress.
The "self-made man isnll right,
bub the fellow who is "made
ovei?' by a "ood wife" has got
him skinned a mile:
A fellow can't expect to ''act
right" unless he "thinks right."
