Jack Frost has come at last with his glass eyes and took all that was green, A great deal of cotton will not open till late. The; wind has been blowing ince started out for they blow all their wind out of them, That's , all thy can do. Wa still have a great deal " of f cloudy weather and ain. The cotton eins can be heard in full blast all around. P. S. Kluttz has the frame of hie new two-story house up. Burt Peeler bought a fine mule last week. r C. W, Graham bought the old Jim Burkhead place and will move, in his new home in a week or so. He will also run a saw mill. J. M. Albright has rented the John Hafkey place. Smith Qauble's baby has been quite sick. . There is an exciting county campaign now on, but that need not worry you in the least, for J. O. Houston will get there all - the same. Their has been but little corn gathered around here and but lit tle; wheat in thejground yet. P. S. Kluttz sold seven bales of cotton and will have three or four more. Purity, veracity, honesty and charity are great things which cannot be too highly valued. Those who.value;them at all are r coming to rahae them more than ever be$pre, perhaps because they saem to be becoming more rare. Now that w f ftin hrve -th privi lege of casting or votes for the choice of men who are to fill high positions of trust and responsi bility, both in the national and State governments, let us, as Christian citizens pay due regard, to the character of candidates as well as to their platforms. When partyjpolicies differ solittle as to make it easy for 'one party to ap propriate the issues of the other without repudiation of its own, we may find that we have greater : liberty than ever in casting our ' votes for the right men, without tha sacrific of our political con victions. The best remedy for graft, the only real remedv is to keep grafters out office. The man the basal who does not stand for principles of Christian character cannot be counted upon to make or enforce sound laws for the pro tection and development of life, property and happiness. The man wo is not pure, temperate, true, honest and charitable, is not fit for any positron of trust, either political or financial. We can afford to be exacting in these par ticulars of men who offer them selves for pnblic services ; we can not afford not to be exacting. Snipe. e would suggest to our cor respondent that when he uses the writings of others, he give the name of the person he quotes, or put bis extract in quotation marks. Ed. TRADING FORD. r. Golly, but didn't it rain the other day. Some wheat is being sown, but the prospects are for a small crop. The recentfrost played havoc with the cotton. There wfll be no more white cotton to open. It looks now as if good cotton would bring 12 or 14 cents per pound. We ha a ekat recently with Uncle Tom, from Yadkin Ripples. He likes to smoke a 2 1-2 cent cig ar and tell jokes ae good as ever. Just what all bachelors like. We are glad to note at this writing that Mrs. M, A. Corne lison is much improved. It seems now that she will get well. We are sorry that Miss Luey Barrier, of Gold Knob, will not Ueach the winter school here. It is not definitely known yet as who will teach. Miss Josie Cornelison, of this place, will be assistant teacher in the school. Some of the tenants here are moving already. They expect to get into their w quarter before cold weather. We have been making hay for over two weeks and are not through yet. If the editor needs anything of this kind this winter we will take him a fork full. Sam Snort. GOLD KNOB. Oct. 22. That dreaded cabbage snake has made its appearance again. This time while Miss Frances Trexler was cutting up a head of cabbage she found a well shaped snake, of a whitish eclor about the size of a sewing thread and about seven in ches long. Be careful how you eat cabbage. Miss Lizzie Trexler, daughter of T. J, M. Trexler, f this place, is very sick at her home with fever. The Harvest Home service which was to have been held at St Peter's on October 27th, was postponed 'till a later date. While playing in the yard with her little sisters, little Myrtie Barger, daughter of Jno. H, A. Barger,'of f this place, had the misfortune to break her leg just below the knee. The little girl is doing as well as possible. Jno. M. Brady is getting out lumber for a large barn. Miss Clara Proctor is sick with the chills. Not until a man has a hand-to hand' fight with his neighbor does he feel that it is better to give than to receive. , . Lie, FAITH. The Reformed church mission ary sale will take place here Nov emoer 3rd, on Saturday. Rev. Shuford Peeler will make an ad dress at 11 a. in., just before the sale commences. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Adolphus Lippard, a young house keeper. Whitehead Kluttz, one of the best orators of the State, made an .address at Faith on the issues of the day, and Hodge Krider made an address at the same time. John R . Ludwig who was re cently married, has just awarded the contract to D. A. Wiley for his new residence to be erected on his two-acre lot, near his father's home. Hon. R. N. Hackett, spoke to a good crowd here Saturday eve ning, on the political issues of the day.. It continues to rain and cotton is so badly damaged all over the country. We visited at W. S. Earnhardts recently. . He is one of those farmers who has plentv of every thing around him. His big, new barn is filled foil of the best pea vine hay and fodder. George Hoffner is letting sev eral young men work up some of his granite on a royalty, and it brings him a nice sum of money. .Vekus. How to Cure a Gold. The question of how to cure a cold without unneceesary loss of time is one in which ,we are all more or less interested,' for the quicker a cold is gotten rid of the less the danger of pneumonia and other serious diseases. Mr. B. W. L. Hall, of Waverly, Va., has used Chamberlain's Ceugh Rtmedy for years, and says: "I firmly believe Chambe r 1 a in's Cough Remedy to be absolutely the best preparation on the mar ket for colds.
