Politically,, should y;u wish to over ride the mandates of your party and your conscience, should you havQ suoh a thing, get siome one to carry arouud a pptition re questing yourself to be a candidate. If any one has become convinc ed that Rowan will eoom have a legalized primary, we would sug gest that he have his head bored ancTthewaterdrawn off his brain. Rowan did not vote right for that, but she is improving. farther . to be frilly convinced of f the injustice and ridiculousness of the proposition. Had as well say the farmer shall not barter pota toes for jeans. J' 1 . BUY THE A New Organization, j 'An organization was effected in Spencer last week which is to be kLOwn as the Spencer Retail Mer-' chants' Association, all of the nWrchauts becoming members. The following officers were elected : J. D. Dorsettr president; H. M. Cookn, vice-president; 0. S. Theil ing secretary and treasurer. Motedto Ireitell. The case against the negroes charged with complicity in the Lyerly murder, has been removed from Stanly to Iredell county. Judge Moore made the order of removal "on the ground that it would save court costs and would place the hearing within a con venient distance for the witnesses. Saturday, one week agof the Charlotte News offer. d battle to the Watchman. ' The challenge was immediately accepted and a partial broadside administered, but, it'seems, the would-be uutag oiiist stampeded himself in hi haste to get out of the zone o fire, at least there has nothinp further$beenheard from his camp. It is a sorry kind of a fellow who would strike a cringing coward or crow over the extinction of such a foe, hence we .merely call atten tion to thesituation per se at this time. We published on the first pag of the Watchman today the an nouncement of T. H. Vanderford for mayor. Mr. Vanderford is a life-long Democrat, one of the pil lars of the party. No one hae worked harder, in season and out of season, and accomplished more than he. He is thoroughly capa ble anddeserviLg, and, we believe, will fill the' office with credit to himself and the city Should he he elected, Mr. Vanderford is an enterprising and progressive citi zen and takes much pride and in terest in the welfare oft our grow ing city. The legislature will, to-morrow, begin the consideration of the railroad bill in which there is a clause prohibiting the giving of passes to public officials, and the newspaper men in exchange for advertising. We can hardly be lieve the people of North Caroli na have elected a body of law makers who will seriously con sider such a proposition. The newspapers do not ask for any special privileges or exemptions, but stand readyat all times to do their full duty'toward the state, her industries and the people. Theyare entitled to fair treat ment and" pqual rights with all other exchangeable commodities. The newspapers have space and the railroads have transportation for sale," and, just why these par j ties are to be prohibited from mak ing an exchange of their goods on a basis agreeable tc themselves, is a question we are, unable to -fathom. Surely, no one thinks the newspapers, would be unduly influenced by such a' transaction any more so than by the actual cash paid in by the subscriber, or the snits,. beans and cotton shirts they may obtain in the same man ner from mercantile advertise ments! If they can be improper ly influenced in one way, why not iu another? and if it is wrong for newspapers to use their influence in one particular, why is it not also wrong in another, in all par ticulars? In other words, if in lluence in the bauds of newspa ners is to be considered in the same sense that Jit is wrong for a child to handle a razor, what right have they to it? And as it can only be safely handled by members of the Legislature, why not call it all in and keep it oh tap where they, alone can" make use of it? ? One only needs to fol low this line of reasoning a little Wanted in York County. Sunday Shoriff Krider received a telegram from"the sheriff of York County, S. C., asking him to arrest a woman named Jennie Witherspoon, on a charge cf in fanticide. The woman was ar restei and placed in jail. She strenously denies the crime with which she is, charged. The Baracas to Give Banquet. The social committees of the local Baraca classes, 'will have a joint banquet in the class room of the First Baptist chuTch, on the evening of Tuesdar, January 29th. Brief speeches will be made and there willlJe'musie by the Baraca quartette. The youog .men are disposed to be quite hos pitable and numerous invitations are to be sent out.. In the House, Douglass, of Wake, nominated Senator Sim mons to succeed himself, Har shaw, of, Caldwell, nominated Mr. Adams. So far as can be learned ther are on ly two deaths aslthe result of the storm. The damage in Buffalo is esti mated'at from $1,500,000 to $2,- 000,000. The storm lasted 24 hours, dur ing which time the wind velocity varied from 42 to 85 miles an hour. Five vessels ashore with their cargoes have a total valuation of $ 12,000,000. j The loss to ship ping in the port is estimated at $1,500,000. j To Cut Railwav Mail Pay. In response to the persistent demand of representatives, the House committee on post offices and pc st roads has determined to cut the pay. of the railroads for transporting the mails 10 per cent. Uncer the present arrange ment the railroads receive about $43,000,000 annually, and the cut of 10 percent, will effect a yearly saving of about $4,900,000"to the government. $ This will e the the first read justment of the railway mail j ay since 1876. There are manv who believe that the pay, even with the cut of 10 per cent, is still ex travagantly high, The committee by a vote of 12 to 6, decided to make the reduc tion. It will not become effect ive until alter June oU. Wash-j iugton dispatch. 'sT I THE RREAT TWnr Vnn PtimhAM Anv Othftr WfitS THE MEW HOME SEWINOt MACHINE 60MPAIY ORANQC. MASS.
