On the night of the 22nd a de structive fire occurred in East Spencer. The grocery store of Harkins and Harris was burned with thi good: in the store, in volving a loss to them of about $3,000. The building was owned by C. E. Fesperman and his loss was partly covered by insurance, though he too, is a heavy loser. Mr. Fesperman had just isold the building, but had not delivered the deeu. A residence, adjoining the store, also owned by Mr, Fesperman, took fire and was also destroyed, together with a quau tity of- furniture fnd household goods. of on Fine Horse Clicked to Death. Jas. F. E. Brown, who lives near town, lost a fine horse last Thursday night The horse was eating at a rack and must have gotten his head fastened in some way and choked to death. The store of the Belk-Harry Company was entered by thieves last Thursday night, and a quan tity of clothing, shoes, etc., sto len. There were at least two of the thievei, for when the store was opened Friday morning two old and faltered suits of clothing lay on the floor. They carried off a couple of telescopes filled wfth goods, and one of them was found on Council street Friday morn ing. There is no clue to the men. Entrance to the store was effec ted through a back door, with the aid of a crowbar. . Praise for Morgan and Petfus. Montgomery, Ala., Jan. 25.-Ed-mund W. Pettus and John T. Morgan, the two oldest members of the United States Senate, were re-elected today by the unani mous vote of jthe Alabama legis lature, coupled with words of hearty praise of the lives and the services of the two aged Senators. Senator Morgan is now serving his 30th year in the Senate. Senator Pettus' servica in the Senate has been comparatively brief, as he was first elected in 1897. On the other hand, he has the distinction of beidg the old est member of that body in point of years. He was born in 1821 nd will be 86 years old in July. , Public Building Site. The matter of the site for the government huiMing has been settled, ine site selected was that on Inniss street, from Har per's stable to the corner Church street, the two houses the property being occupied re spectively by Dr. J. F, Griffith and Mrs. J. A. Thomason. When it came to making the deed to the government it appears tnat some of the Heilig heirs obejcted to signing it. The matter has been settled by the government con demning the property and then selecting thg site. It is no known when work on th i building will commence. f i- - Fell bv the WaysiJe. Most or the double track work on the Southern, . between here and Greensboro, has been finish ished. This refers to the grad ing, as the rails havo been laid on only a comparatively small portion of the new' werk. It is expected that the grading will be completed about the mi 'die of March.
