FROM EVERYWHERE. Brief Mention of Events Occurring in Various Localities. . While a heavygnow was falling recently in New York city, a wan dering evangelist exhorted people after thU style : "There'll be a warm time coming for yon sin ners. I'm standing here in the cold to tell you that you'd better enjoy the. snow while you hare a chance. When it begins to rain red hot gobs . of phosphorus on your poor blistered backs, you'll remember the man who stood out in the snow and tried to save you A number of travelers gather ed the other Jav. in a Pennsylva nia town, and in course of con versation discovered that each had been in every statd in the union. All claimed there was a general feeling .among the psople that Roosevelt should be a candidate for a third term. -One of them wrote to the President about it and Seretar Loeb replied, that the President had nothing. to add to the statement made on the night of his last election, when he said he would not be a candidate again. There was a commotion on Wall street last week, A broker was sued for telling a lie, (a very unu sual thing on Wall street.) -The broker is accused of lying about a piece of property he sold to some Massachusetts men. Matters are coming to a nice pass when bro kers are not allowed to lie about the property they sell. Here is the best story of the season. A pair of five-ineh sur geon's scissors were taken from the thigh oMrs. W. R. White, of Braman, Okla., at the Wichita Hospital, in Wichita, Kan., last week. She was operated upon for a tumor four years ago and the scissors were left in the abdomin al cavity. They worked through her body to her thigh causing great pain, and were finally dig covered by means of the X ray. A French scientist has been ex periment with fish. He says they make a sort of humming sound in different tones, which enable them to communicate with each other. Ton L. Johnson Not Chosen. Detroit, 1 Mich, March 21. William Jennings Bryan, in an interview here tonight denied the report that Mayor Tom L. John- c r 1 a i Ban, oi uieveiana, naa ueen cnosen to manage his next Presidential campaign. Ool. Bryan .said that the only reason he could see for the starting of such a rumor was the fact that he recently visited Mayor Johnson over night. Col. Bryan said he had n )t decided whether he wonld be a candidate. Speaking of the railroad situa tion, Col. Bryan expressed the opinion that the.first step toward reform was to ascertain the value of the railroads, since a reason able rate would be one that would give a reasonable return on a legit imate investment, and at present no one knew what the railroads were really worth. Col. Bryan said that the La Follette resolu tion providing for an appraising of the railroads of the country and which was voted down in liongress, ougnt to ue re-iuiro-duced in the form of a bill and enacted into law. "When the present value- of the railroads is ascertained," he said, "steps should be taken to prevent any more watering of stocks. No stocks or bonds should be issued except for full value," Does Coffee disagree with you? Probably it doss! Then try Dr, Snoop's Health Coffee. "Health Coffee" is a clever combination of parched cereals and nuts. Not a grain of real Coffee, remember, in Dr. Shoop's Health Coffee, yet its flavor and taste closely matches old Java and Mocha Coffee. If your stomach, heart or kidneys can't stand Coffee drinking, try Health Coffee. It is wholesome, nourishing and satisfying. It's nice even for the youngest child. Sold by N. P Murphy. NEWS OF THE STATE. Happenings of Interest Wbidi Hue Taken Plaie in Nortli Carolina Recently. It is stated that the president of a cotton mill in .Burlington, has instituted 37 penalty suits against tne Southern Railway Company, and has a number in soak. - Col. Hardie, of Guilford coun ty, recently lost six fine horses from a peculiar disease. The ani mal's ttfroats would swell up and stop them from drinking. The State veterinarian made an inves tigation and concluded the trou ble was caused by a parasite of some description in the corn. It is said the cows on the farm have been eating the same corn and they have not been affected bv it. A negro convict on the State farm near the coast attempted to escape. He was swimming across a body of deep water when he was shot and killed by a guard. The board of aldtrmen of Fay etteville, will pay the hospital ex penses of the officers, who were sho some time ago by the negro, Tom Walker. The salaries of the two policemen who were killed will be continued to their fami lies during the balance of the term of the present board. A little ohild was playing on the railroad track at Rocky Mount the other day, when it was knock ed down and run over by a pass ing engine. The mother witness d the accident and thought her child was killed. There was re joiciug when it was found that the little one was not seriously hurt. Tfae child lay between the rails and the engine passed over without touohiug it. ' The citizens of Asheville have raised $2,500 f jt the families of the policemen who were killed in that city some time ago, by a ne gro, while trying to arrest him. Rice, near here Friday and who was driven off by Mrs. Rice's shep herd dog, was summarily execut ed today by a mob of about 300 persons. Tied to a tree with his arms up, the negro was riddled with bullets, the first shot, it is said, being fired by Rice, follow ing which every man in the crowd emptied his revolver at the pris oner. Over 1000 shots were fired. The negro was captured today half a mile below town and was -taken before Mrs. Rice who fainted at the sight of him. Upon recover ing she fully, identified her assail ant and on being asked what she wanted done with him, told the negro's captors to do as they thought best. Harding was ta ken a short distance from the Rice home where a conference of the mob leaders was held. Some said burn him, but shooting was decided on. Beyond confessing his guilt the negro had nothing to say, and was stolidly indifferent to his fate. The body was left tied to the tree by , the.mob, members of which made no effort to shield their identity. The sheriff overtook the crowd before the lynching but his appeals were unavailing. Lost and Found. Lost, between 9:30 p. m. yes terday and noon today, a bilious attack, with nausea and sick head ache. To be tlDved to Statesiille. The office of the commissioner of internal revenue for the west ern district of North Carolina, is to be moved from Asheville to Statesville. This decision . was today announced by Mr. Yerkes, commissioner of internal revenue, after having the matter of locat ing the office nnder consideration for a year or more. , Tbis office has been located .in a number of towns in western North Carolina in times past, but for 15 years it has been located at Asheville. When it became known a little over a year ago that the commissioqer of internal revenue was thinking of making a change on account of Asheville not being centrally located, a number of towi;s, among them 'Statesville, Winston-Salem and Salisbury, sent delegations' here to press their several claims. The commissioner has had the case un der consideration since then. The home of the present collector, Mr. Brown, is at Statesville, and he recommended that the office be removed to Statesville. Mr. Yer kes states that the removal is for good business reasons, States ville is much more conveniently located, being a center of the reve nue producing territory. The two principal revenue towns, Sal isbury and Winston-Salem are es pecially convenient. This removal will be a consid erable advantage to Statesville and a loss to Asheville.
