It is stated that one Walter Blackwelder and Grove Page started.to visit the home of a wo man of questionable reputation, and that the former had been drinking rather freely. By mis take they went to the home of Henry Walker, who watchmairat a quarry. entered the house and proceeded to the room of Mrs. Walker who was sick in bed. Blackwelder is said to have made insulting pro posals to Mrs. Walker, and " while he was talking with her, Mr. Walker came in. He ordered the men to leave the premises. Burton entered the jail October 22; 1906. The fine, which has not been paid, will be held over him as a civil judgment. A fire that did coLsiderable damage here this afternoon originated in the boiler room of the Edgerton John son Lumber Company. The saw mill of the lumber company wai entirely destroyed together with a quantity of lumber on the yards. The loss will not be less than reach any verdict and the hearing &,Q00K with only about half that of the matter was postponed. Blackwelder and a couple of others, Charles Collett and' Will Burton are in Jail, but the affair is still enveloped in mystery. A Disastrous Fire. Spartanburg, March 25. The most disastrous fire ever known in Spartanburg swept through the vil tags of tne Spartan Mills this morning, burning 61 houses of the operatives, all owned by the mill, and rendering 325 operatives homeless and without food and clothiug. The loss is estimated at between $50,000 and $60,000, perhaps more, for when the loss sustained by the mill company is known it may reach greater fig ures. The Spartan Mills insured on these buildings about six monthe ago. Before that no in surance was carried. The fire started at 11 o'clock in a house oceupied by J. M, Carver, a mill operative, and the flames being fanned by a southwest wind spread rapidly. The wind-swept flames raged for three hours, clear ing forty acres of mill houses de spite the furious fighting of the firemen. The flames covered a distance of half a mile from the point where they started to where they were stopped. Special to Charlotte Observer. Slashes His Throat. Danville, Va., March 25. Stuart F. Bradburn, son of J. F. Bradburn.a prominent citizen of Bridgewater, Va., made a sensa tional attempt at suicide at the station here this afternoon by cut ting his throat with a pocket knife He inflicted a wound which reach ed the hollow of his throat and with bl.od pouring out of the wound rushed out among a crowd at the station and fought savagely the policeman, who restled the knife from his hands. Au opera tion was performed at the hospital to night and the victim has a chance of recovery. Relatives from Bridgewater will arrive tomorrow. The Atlantic Coast Line lost two flat cars load ed with logs and one box car load ed with . dressed lunfber. The Carolina rice mill lost two storage warehouses and a quantity of rice and chaff. There were 15 tenant houses owned by investors in real estate and occupied by negroes, that were destroyed. Two houses had to be torn down in order to prevent further destruction by the flames It was the biggest fire that Goldsboro has had in some time and the damage will foot up several thousand dollars. For the first time in 10 years all rail communication from San Fran cisco and the north is severed to day as a result of the floods and consequent washouts and land slides. All thre trans-continent al lines are affected. The Santa Fe is transferring passengers to boats at Stockton, and expects to maintain traffic be tween there and San Francisco by that means. ine bait lafee line is in worse condition than ever. For weeks all through traffic on the Clark road has been suspended owing to the destruction of 80 miles of road bed in Meadow Vallev canvon in r 1 Utah. The road cannot be re stored in months. More than 1000 veterans at the National Soldier's Home here are suffering ptomaine poisoning, the result of eating meat hash at breakfast'tfiis morning. The first symptoms of trouble was mani fested several t hours after break fast. Soon the Home Hospital was crowded with sick veterans and the ambulances were rushing in from the barracks with loads of them. This afternoon an officer in charge of- the hospital at the soldiers' home staled that none of the veterans was seriously ill ; that most of them had been dis charged after treatment, and that there was no likelihood of any deaths occuringfrom the ptomaine poisoning. Most of those afflict ed, he said, simply suffered a slight vomiting spell. Lumber Company at Work. The J. Randall Williams Com pany, of Philadelphia, Pa has commenced grading for its track near the location of the Brenner Company's plant. When these tracks are all completed, which will probably be in about a month, the company ill begin Jjusiuess operations. This concern makes a specialty of handliug lumber for shipment to -both domestic and foreign points. A force of about fifty men will be employed. Tetter, Salt Rheum and Eczema. Coroiipr Richmond concluded the inquest at 7 o'clock to night over th" killing of Grover Page, near Whitehall on Saturday night. As a result Sheriff Harris was in structed to hold, without bail, Waiter Blackwelder, Will Burton and Charlie Collett, all being im plicated, uutil the May term of Court. A preliminary hearing will be had before Esquire G. M Lore, tomorrow morning, but the coroner s instructions will in probability stand. The little fellow disappear ed when he started to school and since that time, it is alleged hr has been in the custody of Chil dress, who resides on the outskirts ot the city.
