THE CAROLINA WATCHMAN. W1L H. 8TBWART, Bd. a&4 Pob. Pabliilra Stmt At ISO Btnet Subscription PiWfl Pr jr itxietly cash la adrmae Entered u second-class matter Jaa. 19th. IMS, at the poet oflee at Balls bury, N. d, uader th act of Control of Much trd. Ht7. Salisbury, N.C., Nov. 6th, 1907. Walter George has hired some one to write another lette? which sets forth his ignorance very clearly. State Senator Whitehead'Kluttz delivered an address before the Collegiate Institute at Mt, Pleas ant Friday night and of course delighted his audience from Btarfe to finish. His theme was: "Love, Serve." Cotton is now bringing only 10 4 cents per pound and there is very little coming in. The farmer is exactly riehfc if he can hold it The price will surely increase suf ficientlv to iustifv him for his W trouble. The Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodis Episcopal Church, South, wil meet in this citv next week. Thia is a body of the State's highes citizenship and Salisbury is glad of the opportunity to welcome them, entertain them and enjoy their company while ki her midst In the loss of the plant and fix tures of the Stanly Enterprise by fire, J. D. Bivinsj the proprietor has our hearfelt sympathy. We have eagerly looked for, read and enjoyed the Enterprise for years and highly appreciate the editor's courageous and sensible way of doing things, and it is our sincere wish that arrangements will be made which will continue the paper's visits to its many friends! W. T. Thompson, a colored res taurant keeper near the passenger depot, has been bound over to the Superior court for retailing whig; key on Sunday. If Thompson wants to be exempt from such little annoyances he had bettei get himself straight with the po litical committee of the whiskey ring. Attention is called to the fact that the blind tiger does not hi himself to the tall timbers be cause open, ''regulated" bars exist in a community. Mrs. Hall, wife of George Hall, the lonely victim of tta court's wrath for the lynching of the Gillespie negroes, August 6th, one year ago, has several petitions in circulation asking the Governor to pardon George. She has quite a number of signers. We do not know George to be the kind of a man to have running at large, but do believe that hri punishment in proportion to the amount given his accomplices, nothing, is entire ly too severe and unjust. - We have just received the "Bi ennial Report Superintendent Public Instruction," of North Carolina, by Superintendent J. Y Joyner. Like the report of the .bureau ot I abor and Printing it merely represents a waste of pub lic money. It is well enough to have such statistics gathered and kept in reach of those who may need them, but the publication and distribution of them is where in the waste lies. Such books are seldom given more than a casual glance. There has been a very decided financial stringency throughout the country, which started in New York, or several weeks a num ber of banks and trust companies have failed and conditions have not yet, though greatly improved, resumed normal conditions. Quite a number of banks in North Carolina have decided to issue script to be used instead of cash and just why, and wbtere this thing is to stop, is not clear. The action of J. Pierpont Morgan, John D Rockefeller and the United States Treasury department, who have dumped large quantities of cash on the market at 6 per cent, inter est, has done much to restore con fidence, and a cargo of gold from England yesterday made things look brighter. Just why the banking institutions in this State hould consider it necessary to withhold cash payments is not generally understood and in some quarters is not approved. The cause of this panioy condition is said to be the result of attacks on corporated-wealth by State gov ernments and the national govern ment. The unfavorable leeisla- ion In s been aimed at the oppres sive and monopolistic t ndfiiVeies of corporations, trusts and specu lators in watered stocks. It is not confined to any one section of the country and has been more detrimental to these interests than others, but, of course, some innocant companies' and individ uals have been made to suffer. We have no--special desire to ac cuse any one of anything they are not clear of, but, in order to keep history straight on this subject, we call attention to the fact that these things are happeniug under Mr. Theodore Roosevelt's admin istration, a republican, and that the occurrence has taken place in the fall of the year 1907. You know politicans, make much ado over such matters, hence it may be W9ll to remember some things. A Hard Debt to Pay. "I owe a debt of gratilude that can never be paid off," writes GK S. A Young Man Found Dead. -A 1 a . .an uuxnown young wnite man was found lying at the bottom a nu Decween unma Virove and Landis Saturday morning by H H. Troutman. The authorities - A f ! Jl " were nounea ana an inquest was heldjby the coroner. His skul was broken and his body bruised and it is thought that he had fallen from a passenger train dur ing the night. $12 in cash, passes to the Jamestown Exposition made out to D. R. Davis, and a letter addressed to a young woman were found in his pockets, which caused $he Corotfer's jury to conclude that the remains were those of D. R. Davis, unknown hereabouts. Virginia relatives ot Robt. D. Ca pell, whohadbeen tothe exposition, but had not been heard from for several: days thought possibly it was he, but after exhuming the re mains which had been interred at the county home Sunday, one who knew Capell intimately de clared such was not the case. His identity will, therefore proba bly remain unknown. You can't be well if you have a weak, unhealthy, tired out stom ach. Neither can you feel good if by some, little irregularity in eating you have caused the stom ach to get out of order. These little stomach troubles are signs of indigestion, which may and very often turn into a very bad case of dypepsia.
