The Bowery Mission "Bread Line," at which 1,000 men who are out in the streets for the night are given a breakfast of hot cof fee and rolls everv moraine at one o clock, is one of the mosti pathetic sights in all wide, wide world. Long before the hour of opening, these poor, starving men stand in a single line that some times extends for blocks in length, waiting for the coffee and rolls. During the last winter, this break fast was given to a total of 144, uuu nomeiess men ana boys and to date nearly half a million of homeless have had their weary tramp restfully interrupted by this unique ministration. The first of these breakfasts is given Thanksgiving and the last on the following Easter morning. Alto gther the Mission supplied, this year, over 233.000 meals and 10, 072 lodgings to homeless men and boys. It is for this 7and, philan- trophic work that we ask your kind and practical co-operation. The homeless, friendless, dis heartened and despairing men boys of the Bowery are not native New Yorkers but men and boys who until "within a year, lived happily at the old homestead with father and mother, and per haps wife. "They are stranded here, and in despair appeal to the Old Bowery Mission, which, for over thirty years, has been to the unfortunate, as the rescue cities of old, a heaven of encourage ment, rest and protection. . Shall we turn them away? It rests with the good people of this country to decide this question, and may God graciously help you to decide it right. John C. Why should the demand that they be singled out for special favor? There is no reason for it in the world, great as the boon would be. The tariff should be modified all along the line and all the peo ple be given the benefit of reduc tion. If the press of the country would insist upon this as unani mously as it does upon the wood pulp it would be in a more con sistent position and could argue its own case with better face if it made it only a part of the com mon cause than it can when pleading for a special privilege.
