Church South, containing the minutes of the eighteenth annual session, held in Salisbury Novem ber 13-18, 1907, has coma from the press. Copies will be mailed to the pastors in the Conference at once, and they will distribute them to their members. The Jour nal gives 85,072 as the total num ber of members of the church in the conference this year, an in crease of about 3,000 members, since the meeting of the Confer ence of a year ago. Statesville Mascot. There are two citizens of Dav idson county who have no right to kick about their taxes. The tax on one of them is two cents and on the other three eents, in each instance it being on land. What county can show a lower tax than this? Speaking of conditions at the North Carolina Soldier's Home, State Auditor . F. Dixon, who is more intimately connected with the management of the home than any one else probably in the state, said: "You have no idea how things have changed at the home in the past seven years. The boys there are getting older and fee bler, deaths are much more fre quent and there are usually some forty of them in the hospital; the "gray" line is rapidly breaking these days for it is forty-two years since the war ended and the years are beginning to tell. We have 144 old veterans in the home now, which fills it up so that there are only vacancies as deaths occur. Statesville Mascot. The Charlotte Chronicle sounds this cheerful and encouraging note: ''The politicians and the demagogues are going to find that the farmers, manufactures and business men of the State are doing their own thinking, this year. New Berne, Jan. 9. The old historic building which was part of the Tryou palace before the revolutionary war, was destroyed by fire today. The building was used as a residence by James B Duffy and was in excellent state . ' - . . . . oi preservation, despite its ex treme age. The fire originated from a defective flue. The 19th and 21st are Lee's and Jackson's birthdays, and will be observed in many places in the south. High Point, N. C, Jan. 6. The contract for the building of the Carolina Valley railroad has been let to Dodge & Day, of Philadel phia, and work on the read will be commenced between here and Thomasville just as soon as equip ment can be gotten on the ground for that purpose. Some sixty teams have been employed and the steam shovels and dummy en gines suitable for the work are now being purchased. It showed a slight falling in prescriptions from the November report. One physician prescribed liquor 60 times, one 50; one 86 times and one 28 times - but the great majority of them prescribed it from one to six times pnly. Greensboro Telegram. Ashville, Jan. 8, Another chapter has been added to the race'riots at Bryson City, by the burning of the county court house and the destruction of all the public records for both town and county. No official document o any Kind was saved, ana among the Bcores burned were the mar riage license registers for a period of t0 years. The court house was entirely destroyed, the hre being of mcen diary origin, and following the arrest of a number of negroes fcr participating in the race riots that have been going on for some time. The most precautionary measures have been taken by both town and county authorities, to put down the existing lawlessness and a curfew law was passed to day directed against the negroes who. it is alleged, have been re sponsible for the riots. jno negro is allowed to be on the street after 9 o'clock under i penalty of being arrested.
