Slime Old Time Winters. Today, January 18th, ..J the fifty-first anniversary of the snow in North Carolina, when a- train that set out from Charlotte tor Raleigh was snow-bound for four days at Jamesjbown, Colonel Brad shaw is the only surviydr ofjthe crew. For year&'afterward, Colo nel Bradshaw, Capt. Frank Snider and Joe Mehaffey, of the crew, and Mayor William T, Yates, a passenger, celebrated the event by a dinner in Charlotte on the 18thT of. January. Colonel Bradshaw, having no prediliation for ghost dinners, gave up the cuBtom with the death of the last survivor ex cept himself. In a reminiscent mood, Colonel Bradshaw recalled that the year 1856 ia known.as the year of the seven big snows. Then followed! the big snow of Januaary, 1857. In 1858 the great sleet storm that destroyed trees ail over North Carolina, These were" fierce winter times, but in Febauary, 1806, there was a snow storm that lasted contin uously for four days, that filled the fields to a level four feet and that piled the snow above doors of the floors of hours. Such were aome of the old timejsnow storms,. CharlotteObserver. The Value of the Spanish Peanut. ine bpanish peanut is coming -to the front as a great Southern crop. The demand for' hay and feed is greater now than it has ever been and it seems as if it is a hard matter to get anything to surpass the improved Spanish pea . nut. it grows well in most any section, yields satisfactorily on all soils, and above all, it makes an abundance of hay. Talking with a leading seedsman I learn that the chances are good seed will be scarce this year. Consequently any one wishing to secure some should investigate the matter and procure a supply of seed. The plant is one of remarkable value and the demand for them is constantly increasing. The value of the nuts alone more than pays for the entire crop, and besides this the hay yield is worth more than the nut crop. It keeps well in stacks, is easily harvested and cured and is one of great value in feeding. Peanuts are one of the few crops that combine the quali ties of raising food for hogs and cattle at the same time, but never theless there is nothing better for hogs than peanuts aaad nothing better for cattle than the hay. Horses do well on the same ra tion, too, as for that. Home and Farm. Southern Gotton Associalion at Charlotte Last Week. "Be it resolved, That this body is not in sympathy with immigra tion promoted by commercial agents who import a class of un desirable people to this country, but that it would welcome that kind'of immigration which will bring among us industrious and law-abiding citizens' who will be ready to conform with American principles. A tickling cough, from any cause', is quickly stopped by Dr. 3ho'op's Cough Cure. And it is bo thoroughly harmless and safe, lhat Dr. Shoop tells mothers everywhere to give it without hes itation even to very young babes. The wholesome green leaves and tender stems of a lung-healiDg mountainous shrub, furnish the curative properties to Dr. Shoop's Cough Cure. It calms the cough, and heals the sore and sensitive brouichial mem brane s. No opium, no chloroform, nothing harsh used to injure or suppress. Simply a sesinous plant extract, that helps to heal aching lungs. The Spaniards call this shrub whioh the Doctor uses, "The Sa cred Herb." Always demand Dr, Dr.Shoop's Cough Cure. Grimes Drug Store. Precedents by the Score. Many of the papers are much excited over the. prospect of the passage of a prohibi tion law at the special session of the Legislature. Calm your selves, ibrethren ! As The Land mark sees it, there is little dif ference between passing the meas ure now and waiting a year, al- thouerlnthis DaDer has no advice to offer About 90 per cent of the State is under prohibitum now and at least 75 peri cent of this was broughtabout by direct acts of the Legislature not by a vote. From time to time thous ands, of -acts were passed incorpo rating churches, school houses, etoi Then cafbe the Watts law, the Ward law and special acts driving liquor out of Hamlet, Marion, Morganton and other places. It's rather late to talk about local optioaahd the voice of the people. So far as the lat ter is concerned, The Landmark is satisfied that the sentiment of the State is overwhelmingly for State prohibition. As well let the tail go with the hide. Calm yourselves brethren. Statesville Landmark. Hard Year on Newspapers. The year 1907 was an especially hard one on . the newspapers. It is reported that about four hun dred were forced tp suspend pub lication. There are several reasons why the year was a hard one. Paper has cost aboutone-third more than formerly. Labor has been high. The cost of living has been high, and the income from subscriptions has been low in comparison with other years. Catawba County News. Prohibition's March. 1851 Maine passed first pro hibition law, tinder Neal Dow's lead. 1870 Persons living in "dry" states (estimated), 4,000,000. -1908 Persons who will be liv ing under absolute prohibition, or city, town or country prohibition (estimated) 33,000,000. Number of states that will be "dry" after January 1, five (Geor giaf Kansas, Maine-, Oklahoma and North Dakota ) A year from to-day Alabama will be "dry" by state enactment. A large portion of the state, including Jefferson county, in which Birmingham is located, is already "dry." Kentucky, with $100,000,000 invested in manufacture of liquor, has 97 "dry-' counties out of 119. North Carolina has "dried" 99 per cent, pi her territory. South Carolina, 17 out of 41 counties "dry." lennessee has but three cities where liquor can be legally sold. Fights for prohibition being waged in'MissisBippi, Maryland, Viriginia and Delaware. Massachusetts has 250 "dry" towns. 100 "wet" ones. Sixty-two per cent of the pop ulation of New Hampshire lives in "dry" territory. CURE YOUR KIDNEYS. Flour: Perfection, Straight, and Pancake; Buck wheat Flout, Meal, Chops, Corn, Wheat and Oats, Mixed Feed.. -Shuping Bros,, Rock'. ; Salisbury's nrstTrtlD, In quoting from an old ; diary, kept by the late Jas. R. Crawford, a; prominent citizen of Iredell county, the Statesville Landmark reproduces the following : "January 4th A cloudy day. In Salisbury, Here Lfind a mix ed multitude of every grade and character, assembled for the pur pose of witnessing the arrival of the cars from Cliarlotte. Here are perhaps some 10 or 15 thous and, manifesting by their presence and countenances their interest in rthe welfare of North Ctrolina. At 11 o'clock the cry is heard. The cars are coming. Then is heard the roaring of cannon and the en thusiastic shouts and huzzas of the'excited crowd. We repair to the rostum and listen to an able and patriotic address by Judge J. W. Ellis afterward Governor until quiet is again disturbed by the arrival of a second and third train. After the close of this ad dress Moorehead Js called upon and makes a few very appropriate remarks.' He compliments the Legislature highly for the very favorable spirit they maintain towards internarSmprovements. Three cheers are called for and three shrill whistles from each of the three snorting engines, ming led with the roaring cannon and 9houtmg multitude, were heard echoing and re-echoing over the hills and valleys. A great day this for Salisbury ..and Western Carolina. The orator expressed his inability to do justice to the occasion and retired very grace fully, leaving the field to the iron orators, as he expressed it. At two we partook of the barbecue prepared for the occasion and at three witnessed the ascension of a balloon by Prof. Elliott. 'r A Cure For Small-Pox. 9 Dr. J. J. McElwee, Secretary of the Missouri State Board of Health, gives the following receipe lor smallpox. "I herewith append a receipe which has been used, to my' know ledge, in hundreds of cases of small-pox. It will prevent t r cure though the pittings are fill ings. When Jener discovered the cow pox in England the world of science iovrwhelmed him with- fame, but when the most scientific school of medicine in the world. that of Paris, published this rev ceipe it passed unheeded. It is as unfailing as fate, and conquers in every instance. It will also cure scarlet fever. Here is the receipe as I have used it to cure small pox : Sulphate of Zinc, one grain : digitalis, one grain ; one-half teas- poonful. Dissolve in a wine glass of soft water which has been boil ed and cooled. Take- teaspoonf ul every hour. Either scarlet fever or small-pox will disappear in twelve hours. For children the dose must be dimished according to age. If communities will com pel their physicians to use this treatment, there will be no need of pest houses. If you value your life use this receipe. What Rum Had Invested In Seorglf Do you know how much it costs when a State goeB dry? Take Georgia. On January 1 every saloon in Georgia was clos ed. Every wholesale liquor house closed. Thousands of people had to find nw employment or move outside the State. There were 42 distilleries in Georgia and 850 licensed places for the sale of alcoholic drinks. The capital invested in breweries and other forms of the liquor bus iness was more than $6,000,000. The city of Columbus alone lost $50,000 in revenue. Savannah, Macon and Augusta lost $75,000 each. It cost -Atlanta $150,000. The Federal government loses $500,000 and total annual revenue lost to the State of Georgia and its cities estimated at $750,000. Milwaukee Journal. Rank Foolishness. If it is an absolute, despotio mon archy, it is also a very democratic country, with self-made men, its powerful jpublio opinion, and a 'states rights." question of its own. it is one or tne most cor rupt of nations; , on the other hand, the standing of personal and commercial honesty is prob ably higher in China than in any other nation in the world. Wo man, inChina, is made to serve; her status is so low that it would be a discourtesy even to ask a man if he has a daughter; yet the ablest ruler China has had in many centuries is a woman. It is a land where the women wear socks and tousrs, and the men wear Btookings and robes ; where a man shakes his. own hand, not yours ; where white, not black, is a sign of mdvming ; where the compass pointssouth, not north ; where books' are read backward, not forward; wherd names and titles are put in reverse order, as in our directories Thebdore Roosevelt would be Roosevelt Theodore in China, Uncle Sam would be Sam Uncle ; where frac tions are written upside down, as eight-fives, not five-eights; where a bride wails bitterly as she is carried to ner weaaiug, ana a man laughs when he tells you of his mother's death.
