Blalook, a worthy colored man of Vance county, has invented a'cotton barrer and chop per which it is claimed will Bave much labor. It will barr off, chop and replace the dirt taken from the plant all at tne same time. , . - The Episcopal Convention of the Diocese of North Carolina in session at Raleigh passed rasolu tions condemning the sale of alco holic liquors except for medici nal purposes. It is reliably reported that Lex ington is to have a new post of fice building which will cost sixty five thousand dollars. The peo pie of Lexington have been woik ing for more than twe years for t new post office. Esau Gray and Sam Walker, both negroes, had a fieht at Bel haven the other day. Gray first stabbed Walker in the breast, notching his breast bone ; then he slashed him in the ribs and cut one rib in.two; and with the same stroke divided Walker's liver into several parts. Notwithstanding all these wounds Walker chased Gray 400 yards, and then walked back a mile to get a doctor to sew up his wounds. Gray baa been captured and is in jail. The cruiser North Carolina has been placed in commission. It is stated that the presentation of the silver service given by the state will take place at Norfolk instead of at Cape Lookout on account of the dangerous character of the water at the latter place.1 The residence of Jno.R. Wood of Conoord was totally destroyed by fire last week. The house was in names when discovered and noth ing was saved except a piano and some trunks. The loss is over $2,000 with $1,600 insurance. Governor Glenn was the princi pal speaker Thursday before the NationalJResource Conference of Governors at Washington. His subject was the Appalachian White Mountain project, and he argued eloquently for action by Congress that will preserve the forests of the nationl The inmates of Buncombe coun ty jail have for the last fear weeks been very much frightened at night by the appearance of "strange faces at the iron bars." Jailer Mitonel determined to nnd out if possible just what was causing such fright. He lay'down on a cot and awaited the arrival of the "spook." It made its appearance about 11 o'clock. On investiga tion it was found that a large lo cust tree and the moon were the cause of it all. The moon shining i- through the bars had caused fan tastic shapes to be thrown against the window, ' I Chas. McCormick, Ex-Goveruor, Daniel L. Russell died Thursday at his home in Brunswick county after a long period of ill health. He Lad been a judge of the Superior Court, had served in the Legislature, served one' term in Congress and in 1896 was elected Governor on the fusion ticket! Since his retirement f rom the Governor's chair he had been practicing law in Wilmington. . Thos. F.iHopkins, of ConcoH was attracted Wednesday morning about 2 o'clock by thev cries of a woman, and when he opened the door a woman pushed her way in followed by & drunken man. Mr. Hopkins tried to persuade the man to leave but with no success The fellow, who gave his name as Campbell, wag trying to take the woman home, and she had become so frightened that she , made the putcry stated. Finally the man left, and Mr. Hopkins took his family Jio A. Viola's and notified the police. Meantime the man went back to the house, broke in the window, and 'carried several things away. Thursday night at Lexington fire was discovered in the retail depart ment of the Everhart Grocery Company and before the flames could be checked the Btock and building tegether were damaged to the extent of $6,000, the same being fully oovered by insurance.
