THE CAROLINA VATCHMAH.f A w. Cr-T. u. cohventioh. The closing exercises of the Spencer graded school were held Friday night. After the class exercises Rev, Harold Turner, of Charlotte, delivered a strong ad dress on the relation to the com mnnitv. This school has had a very successful year, and is in every way a credit to the people of Spencer. An additional appropriation of $40,000 for the public building here has been made by Congress. This with the $75,000 that had already been appropriated makes $115,000. The building will be located on the corner lof West Inniss and Church streets. The site has already'been bought and work on it will likely begin soon. Senator Lee S. Overman came home yesterday to vote. Two important changes ha1 Kaon mad a in the tteraonal force of the railroad shops at Spencer. Master Mechanio F. P. Roesh has resigned and has gone to Colo rado, and Shop Supt. E. C. Clark, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, preached the baccalaureate ser mon at Statesville Female College Sunday. He and Mrs. Brown were driving along the macadamized road boUeeu Salisbury and Faith when a bolt that held the shaft dropped and causedjthe shaft to go to the ground, Mr. Brown;canght fKa linAB &nd as he did so tlr buggy was tilted throwing him under it. The horse began run ning hnfc Mr Brown still held to the lines. He was dragged several hundred feet before the horse was freed from the buggy. He was badly bruised but otherwise is not seriously injured. Mrs. Brown stayed in the boggy and was not hurt. To bo Held In Salisbury Friday of This Week. A county convention of the Wo men's Christian Temperance Union will be held in Salisbury in the Methodist Church, Friday, the 29th. Delegates from every or ganization in the county are ex peoted to be present, r and all la dies of the connty are cordially invited to attend. -The exercises will begiu at 11 a. m., with a prayer service conduct- i ed by the ministers of the city, alter wnicn reports trom the coun ty organizations will be read. Various subjects pertaining to the home will be discussed and plans There will be a question box in wSich every question may be de posited before 2- p. m., when the box will be opened and questions answered by Mrs. M. W. Newton national lecturer and organizer. At 4 p. m, Mrs. flewtouv will give an address to the convention. Her subject is : 'The Hour and Its Needs. Prohibition, what next ?- The sessions of the convention will be held at 11 a. m. and 2 and S p. m. The evening session wifl be held in the Baptist church This hour will be given to th young people aud young ladies aMi young gentlemen especially ar urged to be present. There wil: be song service by various choruses and short addresses, after whici ten medals will be presented t the temyoung girls who have takn part in the medal contests. The public is moat cordially in vited to all the exercises. New Advertisements. Attention is called to the state ment of the China Grove Bank. This is a carefully managed &nd safe bank. It has recently in creased its surplus from $600 t $1,000 which indicates meeting with buccbbs. James E. Corriher. Sr., one of the best farmers in China Grove township, was in the city Monday on business. He has qualified as administrator for the estate of the late Dr. Corriher, notice of which appears in this paper. The report of the bank of bpen cer appears in this issue.
