The officers are on the war path for all untag ged dogs. ' Walter F. Rattz, who for some months has been connected with the clerical force of Division Storekeeper, C. J. Norman, resign ed his position on July 1st to take a position in the postoffice. Mr, Rattz is not only a thoroughly competent man, but, he is in all 'respects a , first-class fellow, and one whom his associates will soon jearn: to esteem, The boys in Mr. Norman's office regret to lose Mr. Rattz; but wish him all the prosperity and success in his new positron that he can handle. i One of the heaviest rains that we haye had for years, fell here on last Thursday and Friday .The water came, down in streams And the county has been well soaked. Postmaster Ramsay has receiv ed notification that an examina tion for rural carriers will be held in the city, on August 1st. Carlton attended a meeting of the State. Dental Association at Char lotte, last week. Walter Barker, of Greensboro, formerly with Theo. F. Kluttz & Co., is to be the manager of the Smith Drug Co., which succeeds the Grimes Drug Co. The Salis bury, friends of Mr. Barker will extend him a warm welcome, Supt. Kizer will conduct an ex amination at his office, commenc ing July 9th, and continuing until the close of the week. The exam ination will be for the applicants for the position of teachers in the public schools of the county. The annual Masonic picnic which has become such a feature, will tafce place at Mocxsviile on August 1st. D. R. Shields has disposed of his interest in the Spencer Carbo- nating Company to .S. H. Wet- more and D. H. Dellinger. Letter Carrier Leroy Smith wa6 elected sergant-at-arm s of the re cent session of the North Caro lina Letter Carriers 's Association, held in Asheville. Lieut. Walter Cox, of the Rowan Rifles, entertained the of ficers and non-commissioned of ficers of the company at his home on North Main street last evening: The Concord Tribune says ."J. H. Ragan has returned from Salis bury, where he was with his wifa at the Whtiehead-Stokes sanito rium during an operation, Mrs. Ragan is getting along nicely . " There was very little doing here on Saturday in the way of amuse ments. A few affairs,, had been scheduled for the day, but the rain knocked them out. Jno. S. Gordon, who has resided here for some time, has returned to his home in South Carolina. The hour for Sunday-sohool at the First Presbyterian church has been changed from 4 to -4:80, p. m. . F. Dawkins, of Winston-Salem, is in the city, and will superin tend the laying of the bitulithio streets. The work will begin this week,tand will be pushed as rapid ly as possible. Geo. E. Brookshaw has gone to Washington to see about a valua ble patent in which he and H, T. S pr inkle are inter ested P. A. Frercks, who has been con fined to his home by illness fox several days, is much improved. Rev. Byron Clark, who has been suffering with a serious throat trouble, is slowly recovering. He was able to fill his pulpit at the First Presbyterian church Sunday morning. By, the advice of his physician, he preached but one sermon during the day. Sunday morning Esq. F. In another column is mentioned the death of Miss Stewart, of Davie oounty. The letter writr ten by. thek demented young wo man giving her reasons for her suicide, is as follows : "I am going to take strychnine Saturday night and end my life. I can't live in the world any long er, Jesus calls me home and I am bound to go, I have been in trouble about two weekB. Every thing has seemed to trouble me first one thing and then another. One week ago I was 'on my knees crying ana praying to Jesus, Je revealed to me that I must dio just as as my brother Henderson died. No one in this world can imagine now .1 ieei. 1 am in a dread all the time and so nervous I can hardly stand it. At times I don't know what I am doing. I feel like my heart is bleeding and I can't be still. The Lord has re vealed more to me this week and been nearer to me than He ever was. I could feel His very pres ence. I have been reading the Bible and praying every day. Xt makes me happy to know that I will soon go to heaven and be with Jesus and my brother. The only thii.g I dread is death. It is my last enemy. "My dear papa I want you to become a Christian and meet me in heaven. It.is the Lord's will to take me out of the world to save you. xxib win do aone. 1 am going home to die no more. "The big meeting starts at Je rusalem the second Sunday in Au gust. You and Thead attend that meeting and give your hearts to God. He wants to save you all and make you happy. Be good boys and read the Bible, for it is the sweetest book in this world. "Good bye." The sorely bereaved family has the warmest sympathy of the en tire county. Rev. Ham Remembered, There has been on exhibition in one of the show cases at Leonard's jewelry store, a handsome, solid silver fruit bowl. Upon one side of it is engraved, , "M. F, Ham, memory of May 50th, 1908. From the women of Salisbury." This little token is a remembrance to Mr. Ham for his efforts here during the recent campaign, and 18 00 ENDED HER LIFE. Becoming Despondent a Daile County Yoong Lady Takes Poison. & M ?V tun?-?- l The sad news was received here last Saturday of the suicide of Miss Maud Stewart, who resides at the home of , her father, CT" W Stewart, iri Davie county, about ten miles fiom Salisbury. It is statod that about 8 o'clock in the morning Miss Stewart took a dose of strychnine which oaused her death about and hour later. Some months ago a brother of .the young woman ended his life by poison, and she. had brooded lover 'the 'maiter until it is thcugbt she had become unbalanced men tally. " A few days prior to her death, Miss Stewart had prepared a let ter to her father, which was to be given him later, in which she de tailed her plan of self destruction, and saidjkhe wanted to be with her brother. j The deceased was a member of the Baptist church at Jerusalem and was highly esteemed by her many friends and acquaintances. The funeral took place Sunday, Rev. I. Weston conducting the services. New Adiertlsements. V.
