Next Saturday evening, at 6 o' clock, we will tell yon who is the winner. Southerner. WE ALL FALL DOWN. Only a Question of Sooner or Later' for us to Get Our Dose. One day last week a salesman he was a traveling salesman, very much a traveling salesman for ho is still traveling struck the town, hired a good team and a driver at a livery stable and started out to sell things. He sold. The south eastern part of the county was his territory. The salesman had a great big catalogue, a regular "Roars and Seabuck" marked- down catalogue, and the oilv- tongued fellow told the people wnere ne went tnat ne would give them about half off the catalogue price. For instance, offered a two-horse Studebaker wagon for $23. The fellow s scheme was to get half down7 the balance when goods were delivered. He played 'em like a flute, got his half all right and he's traveling, travel ing on . The goods have not come and a well-known citizen of Lanes Creek township was here last Tuesday using the wires to know "how come?" Trade was good with the sharper the day he spent in Union county. Buggies and wagons were his specials. We might moralize a little just here, but we will not, for next week along may come a guy selling in surance stock or some other easy- looking thing and hand us ours gcod and hard. A dandy agent might not sell you a half-priced wagon oat of a red-backed cata lougue "half down and half when in n comes," but, beloved, yon will get yours sooner or later, sure as gun's iron. JNone of us are so bloomin' smart that we cannot be taken in sometimes So what's the use of one of us lecturing the other? We are all, without ex ception, an easy mark if theright fellow comes along. C. 9 the whole body and keep the 240 Down on Nepotism; Senotcr McCumber, of North Dakota, to-day, in criticising the conference report on the census bill, made the charge that the census office has in its employ in one bureau the wife of a secretary of a Representative in Congress, the wives of two officials of the rWar Department and the wife of a prominent official in the Treasury Department. "Promotion," he said, "seems to be almost wholly for women who have husbands in the departments. This is getting to be a city of of ficial families holding positions under the government. The fact, he said, is that whole families holding positions under the government departments cred ited to the states which the young er menbers of the families have never seen. "Nitety per cent.," said Mr MsCumbecliof officials in the de partments in the city of Washing ton are residents of this city and the other 10 per cent, may be said to be residents of the other por tions of the country. If we were to apply the rules of apportion meat to the civil service the city of Washington would have two per cent, and the remaining officials would be from the States." Further criticism of the report was made by other Senators, the conference was rejected and a far ther conference ordered. Wash ington dispatch. A. W.
