Impeachment Stands. Montgomery, Ala., Jane 18. The Supreme Coart this afternoon denied the application of Frank Cazalas, impeached sheriff of Mo bile county, for a new trial, thns making his impeachment final. Cazalas was removed from the office by the Supreme Court on the charge of gross neglect in al lowing Richard Robertson; a negro, to be taken from the Mo bile county jail and lynched. In the original proceedings before the Supreme Court it was shown that notwithstanding rumors were cur rent that an attempt would be made to lynch Robertson on the night of the occurence, the sheriff took no steps to protect the negro. The posts of the impeachment proceedings amounting to several thousand dollars, were assessed against the deposed sheriff, reported that Cazalas will candidate for re-election in 1 3 vindicate himself. 1 It is be a 1910 i Women Who Are Envied. Burlington, N. JM Jane 18. The "Bean Soup" remedy recent ly. introduced by Sheriff William W. Worrell, as one of his famous reform plans, is not only saving Burlington county several hun dred dollars monthly, but is mak ing more real converts for tern Derance than auv number of "gold cures," Hoboes were the scourage of small cities and towns about the county when Worrell went into office. Past conditions at.the jail had made it a handy Winter Re reat for the "idle sous of the road." When Worrell made the tramp prisoners bathe, wash their cells and do all the work about the iail there was a bolt of free tramps to other counties . The sheriff a few weeks ago be gan to apply the same plan to the "drunks" who are so frequently sent up that the prison officials re garded them as "steadies." When the tramps deserted, the jail work was given to the habitual drunk ards, but in addition the sheriff prescribed a daily menu of "bean soup tor all prisoners, une ex perience under " the "nean soup" meou, the police officials say, is keeping more men sober than the authority of the "flag com mis sion," to which the recent legis lature gave permission to publicly blacklist drunkards. Howls of some of the prisoners over the unchanging diet of "bean soap" are reaching the outer world. One of theeo howls came to Police Captain Shumard, of Burlington. It was written from jail by a local "rounder" and in part read : "Dear Cap: I am writing to see if you can get some of my time taken off. I don't like the bean soap they serve over here now. They don't even use white beans any more. They make it out of yellow beans, but it's bean soup just the same, and nothing but bean soup everv day. D the beans I'm a sober man now and I can keep sober for months, for if you get me out I won't oome back to beans very soon. Cap, if you ever done anything for me in your life, do it now." Twenty tramps who say they Bee things ina different light since geutenced to the bath tub. by Sheriff Worrell, are working as industrious farm hands in the county. Aversion of "drunks" to the bean scup gives promise of reforming several times the num ber of "habitnals." . Got Enough of Winston. The Winston Journal, , of Sun day, contains the following con cerning J R. Doby, who moved up to Winston last week: Mr, Doby has decided that he doesn't like Winston-Salem. He loaded his household belongings upon an immense dray, drawn by four horses, in Salisbury and had them brought to this city yester day. The wagon broke down on Liberty street last night and the car line was blocked for a little matter of three hours or so. Folks worked with the dray and they worked, but it was a long time before the wheel that was borrowed from the Shore Transfer Company could be put on. The wagon was taken to the Piedmont warehouse for the night. It, to gether with the household belong ings, will be carried back to Salis bury. Mr. Doby got disgusted and decided he wanted no Winston Salem in his It cost him $30 to come au'd it will cost him $30 to go back." Columbus, O., June 17 Solo- f- v - TTTril" mon snepnera, anas wuuam Thomas, a negro, yesterday con fessed by accident to the Columbus police that he is wanted at Dur ham, N. C, for murder. He is held awaiting word from Durham Shepherd was pawning a watch i when the police arrested him. He began to deny that he had'killed the man. After some question ing as to what he meant, Shepherd said he was implicated in the kill ing of Engineer Holt, on the Southern between Greensboro and Durham last October. He said the engineer caught him riding the blind baggage and threw him off, whereupon he fired at the en gineer. The Durham Herald publishes the following in connection with the above dispatch : "On the strength of the Colum bus arrest the Barbee case, one of the important ones for which the special term of court was granted this county, may not be tried. The State will ask for a contin uance that there may be given time to investigate the Ohio story. In the natural order oi things, the layman is guessing this is funny, but it is reasonable. The Statw is after the real murderer and Solici tor Fuller said last night that he thinks the investigation, purely in the interest of truth, should be carried to the end. What is in the new story he doesn't pretend to say nor would it be less than a breach of the faith toepeculate upon anything said. It is known however, that Shephard was sometime ago in Petersdurg. Va.f and that he let drop the same remark. Ther. appeared nobody to take it up and he passed on. The Southern Railway has been on his trail and it is noticed that the black man doesn't s&y that he killed the en gineer but that he was with the man who did. The white man is the crimiuaHhat. the Durham au thorities are hunting now. The defense in the Reuben Bar bee case will insist upon trial this week. Barb3e himself has grown weary of confinement and is anx ious for a release which he hopes for with the same iutensity as when he exclaimed upon arrest "false alarm 1' He has been in jail practically the entire year and is tired. Betore Judge Biggs, who is to hear the case, the matter will be brought up probably to morrow or next day. The course of the defence in de manding trial when another man assumes blame for the wicked ness of one under capital charge, is unnatural because it just doesn't happen often. While it is the province of a paper to tell what folks are doing it isn't a good thing to spring this right now. The- mysterious bobbing up of Shepard in Columbns is the most interesting thing thafi has (taken place here since the first accusa tion of murder was brought against any man." Could Not Be Better. FOB SAU KB r m RATTLESNAKE ON THE FOURTH IT was Jude Harper's suggestion that Rattlesnake Creek celebrate the Fourth of July. The judge ran the biggest store in- town and at the same time acted as justice of the peace when anybody wanted law in hunks and chunks, and one day in June he called' for a public mass meeting. When the inhabitants had assembled on the public square he said: "Feller Citizens The Fourth, hain't more'n three weeks away ,t and I have called ye togeth er to talk about celebratin' it in beflttin man ner. Rattlesnake Greek hain't never paid any attention to the day so fur as I kin learn, but she's goin' to do it this time or bust. In fact, she's got to do it or let the town of Red Dog crow over her. Feller cit izens, we Stand bled and died at WE FIT AND DIED AT BUNKER HILL." Bunker Hill, we starved and cussed and shivered at "Valley Forge, we went in and give the British blazes at Yorktown and won our liberty, and the Ainerican eagle is floppin' -iiis wings and askin' fur a chance to scream. Shall we give it to him and put our heels on the tyrant's neck, or shall we loaf around and let the proud bird of freedom fly off with the crows and the tyrant yoke us up like so many oxen?" It was promptly and unanimously decided to turn the American eagle loose and knock the tyrant out in tho first round. Cheers were given and money contributed to accomplish the same, and the Fourth was celebrated in Rattlesnake Creek as follows: When ' the momentous day arrived a salute was fired at sunrise, and there was general hilariousuess during the morning, with frequent cheers for Washington, Benedict Arnold, James J. Jeffries and others. At high noon there was another sa lute, and, as one of the citizens re marked, most of the bullets were high balls. At 1 o'clock the procession formed and marched to the grove. There were general good feeling and whoops for liberty and the American eagle. At 2 o'clock the judge delivered his address on "The Cradle of Liberty." He also incidentally mentioned that his store was the only place in Mon tana where fresh eggs could be had. The balance of the afternoon was strictly devoted to the cause of liber ty. Some of the patriots got Napoleon and John L. Sullivan mixed, but it was no time to be particular. The fireworks were advertised to be gin at dark, and just at sundown, as fuel was being carried to "the square for a bonfire, the judge noticed a ten derfoot on the street and beckoned to him and asked: "Stranger, are ye willin' to obleege?" "As to how?" "As to lettin' us pull ye up to a Jlmb in the cause of liberty?" "Blamed if I don't agree! I've been wantin' to git out of this blamed kentry fur a year, and this is the first chance offered me. Go ahead with your hang in', and hooray fur liberty, free dom. Bunker Hill and any other old thing!" And,' at 8 o'clock were a flight of rock ets, a whiz of "as to now?" roman candles- and a pulling on the rope, and it was the judjje who stood on the steps of his store two hours later and uncovered his head and said: "Freedom, I greet thee! May the banner of liberty never cease to wave over a great nation! And now some of ye show me the cuss who dares git up and say that the town of Rattlesnake Creek hain't saved our glorious Union this day and got 'nuff money left over fur everybody to buy one of my fa mous sugar cured hams tomorrow!" A. B. Lewis. July 4 In American Wars. The Fourth of July has been a big day in the wars of this republic. In 18G1 July 4 was the first day of the ex tra session of congress, with eight -states unrepresented. On July 4, 1803, VicksbwR surren dered to General Grant. On the same day news was sent over the country that the Federal forces had won at Gettysburg. On July 4, 18C4, Grant was gradually driving Lee back, though at a terrific cost of human life. On July 4, 1898, we got the news that Cervera's entire Spanish fleet had been destroyed- off Santiago by the United States fleet, fhat 600 Spaniards had been killed and drowned and 1,400 taken prisoners on the day before. More Hopeful. "It's a pretty serious and always dif ficult matter to raise a boy." ' : "That's right. But we are beginning to feel a good deal more hopeful about our youngster. We've got him safely past his ninth Fourth of July." N
