The Piedmont Industries, of Charlotte, publishes the follow ing : "The Unit Brick and Tile Com pany will expend between $50, 000 and $60,000 in the erection of a plant to manufacture brick and tile at Salisbury. The company will continue the operation of its plant in Charlotte for making tile." Mrs. John J. West died last Wednesday at her home in this city. Mrs. West had been in bad health for some time. The funer al was held at the First Methodist' church, Friday afternoon. Two boys were placed under ar rest at Spencer a few days since, charged with havi ig been impli cated in the robbery of a South ern Railway freight car. The robbery occured at Kannapolis and the boys were turned over to the Cabarrus county officers. The funeral of the late J. G. Witherspoon, whose recent death in St. Louis, has already been noted, was held in Statasville Sun day afternoon. 'R. M. Phillips has been ap pointed disbursing agent here, for the funds to be used in the erec tion of the government building. News was received here Satur day from Charlotte, of the suicide of James Jones, who ended his life by cutting his throat. He had recently been an inmate of the hospital at Morganton. ' Hon. John S. Henderson, who had gone to Asheville to attend the Baraca meeting, returned home Monday mgnt to be present at the funeral of the late Rev. F. J. Murdoch, D. D, John Jackson, the slayer of Of ficer Monroe is becoming very nu merous . Another suspect has been arrested at Erwio, Tenn. Officers may run on the right man after while. Good news in today's Watch man in the advertisement of J. Feldman. He has some special bargains to offer vou in men's ciotmng. ii you want to save money it will pay you to see him . Biggers Is Acquitted. W. S. Biggers, of Charlotte, who some time ago so ruthlessly shot and killed J. G. Hood, on one of the streets of that city, and who was on trial last week, has been acquitted on the ground of ''con fussional" insanity. Any lady reader of this paper will receive, on request, a clever "No-Drip" Coffee Strainer Cou pon privilege, from Dr. Shoop, Racine, Wis. It is silver-plated, very pretty, and positively pre vents all dripping of tea or coffee. The doctor sends it, with his new free book on ''Health Coffee" sim ply to introduce this clever sub stitute for real coffee, Dr. Shoop's Health Coffee is gaining its great popularity because: first, its ex quisite taste and flavor; second, its absolute health fulness; third, its economy Hlb 25c; fourth, its convenience. A churchman who has resided in Salisbury for tome years, oame here from a parish over which there was a rector who was regarded as one of the bright est and most scholarly men in the ohurch, in the South. The per son referred to had profited great ly by the instruction, the sermons of and association with his former rector. When saying goodbye he expressed regret at leaving the ministrations of such an able man, and the rector remarked to him : "You won't miss me long. You are going to Salisbury, will be member of Dr. Murdoch's parish and you will find him a theologi cal college in himself." And he oame about as near that as men gat. A thorough knowledge of the bible, a vocabulary of almost lim itless range, a master dialectician, possessftd of a mind whioh was both acute and profound, com bined with an intense spirituality, placed him in the front rank of the pulpit speakers of his day. He had a wonderful mind and its powers were apparently inexhaust- able. We often find speakers in the house of worship who possess eith er the anlaytical or synthetical quality of mind to a large degree. Sometimes we find men who pes sess both in some measure, but it is exceedingly rare that we have the pleasure of listening to a speaker who bad cultivated both these qualities to the extent Dr. Murdooh had, It seemed to be a matter of conscience with him to always be at his best. No matter whether he preaohed to a crowded congregation at St. Luke's or to only a dozen people at one of tne mission cnurones in tne coun ty, he invariably gave his best and he did it every time he preach ed a sermon. He made no effort at oratorioal display, was not elo quent in the popular sense of the word, but how he could send home to the heart the great truths of the gospel. He did not appeal to the emotions, but rather to the spirituality, the will, the intellect and the affections. He spoke in an easy, conversational tone, kind, earnest, forceful and with a pow er which always oarried convio tion with it. While, as stated, he never tried to play upon the emo tions, yet often would he touoh the heartstrings and make them vibrate to the sweetest 'music. While never failing to proclaim the gospel of Christ, he was fond of especially emphasising St. John 15-12: "This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you." He was in the habit of calling this the "eleventh com mandment," and was accustomed to lay frequent stress upon the faot that this commandment, while too often neglected, was AUAItit$20. Engineer Hinton, of the South em, had an experience the other day with the 8alisbury-Spenoer Eleotrio line. Turn Watchman is no lawyer, but it does not believe Mr. Hinton has a shadow of a case against the street oar -company and it is of the opinion that no suit will follow. The company has a legal right to make reason able rules for the government of its traffic, and one of these rules is that conductors shall carry with them only a small amount of change. Tex Watchman is rather iuolined to the belief that after he has thought over the matter. Mr. Hinton will oonoJude that he was just a trifle inconsiderate in ex pecting a street car conductor in Salisbury to be able to ohange a $20 bill and that the matter will be settled without a suit. 0 0 0 0 o 0 $28,850 PAID I CAPITAL.
