The day will be celebrated at Rockwell; Kluttz and Memos' BOhool house, near OhiuaGrove, at Union Church, and DOBsibly other poiuts in the county on Saturday, July 3rd. IN MEMORIAM. Francis Johnstone Murdoch. When we see a business man asking for patronage on circulars he has had printed out of the city we loose all interest in advocating the purchase of supplies from home merchants. It seems to us, the next bast thing to advocating the purchase of all possible sup plies from tha home merchant, would be to advocate that all good citizens who want to see their town grow, refuse to buy anything from the man whose advertising matter is priuted beyond the bor ders of his home town. There is no excuse for such conduot in Salisbury. Winecoff Has a Sale. As may be seen by a large ad, in today's paper A, W. Winecoff is conducting a very attractive, bargain-giving sale. This sale will contluEifiLlox evarai -d&ysyet-and it might be worth while to look over his ad. and give him a call You can hardly find a place where you will be given more courteous treatment or better goods, for . your money. Winecoff's sales are always attractive to those who Beek big, genuine bargains. The First Cotton Bloom. Monday morning, June 28th, we nere shown the first cotton blos som for Rowan county, so far as reported to this office. It was brought to this office by J. A. Sloop, the popular mail oarrier, and was grown by Abe Torrence, a worthy, hard working Negro, who farms four miles from Salisbury, in Litaker township, near Mr. Sloop's residence . Prizes won by honest toil afe always the most Commendable. Big Lot Sale. It may seem a little off to have a land sale just at this particular time, but such is, nevertheless true. And why not, right now is prob ably the best time for several years past in which to purchase real estate. The West Virginia Land Go,, as may be seen by their big ad. on the last page of this paper is responsible for this enterprise, and E. R. Morrow is managing the gam?. You can see him at the Empire Hotel, Franchise Granted. It is learned from the Concord Tribute, of recent date that the Salisbury citizens, who are enter ested in a proposed street car line for Concord, have been grant ed a franchise. It will be remem bered that the matter was held up temporait, but it seems that at the board of alderman of Concord all objections were removed. There was some struggling on the part of those opposed to the franchise, but the Satisbnry men won out. One condition of the franchise is that a actual work must be commenced on the Jiue in sixty days. Pain anywhere stopped in 20 minutes sure with one of Dr. Snoop's PiDk Pain Tablets. Cornelison & Cook. At a meeting of the vestry of Saint Luke's Church, Salisbury, N. C, held Thursday evening, June 24, 1909, the following minute was unanimously adopted : With heartfelt sorrow, the ves try gives expression to the univer sal grief of the Parish on account of the death of the beloved Rector of Saint Luke's Church, Francis JohnBtone Murdoch. Now that he has left us, we begin to realize how entirely the parish and the other congregations uuder his charge de pended and leaned upon him. His business capacity was remarkable, and he left nothing for another to do that he could do himself. Thoughtfulness and consideration for others.was his distinct charact eristic. He was a man of positive opinions and convictions, and he 'was fearless iu expressing them. His heart was as loving and tender as a child's. He seemed to b shy and reserved in his manner and often absent minded; but he was easily approached. They who knew him Inst loved him most. Men of every faith and of no faith frequently consulted him about matters of consience and personal religion ; and none who thus sought his counsel arid advice failed to receive comfort. He was a good man and was continually and quietly going about doing good We believe ne aiaea in educate. g aud training more boys and young men for the ministry and for other useful vocations than any one now living in the State. Not even his family knew how much he was al ways doing to help his fellow met). Iu rendering aid, he knew no dis tinction of lace or creed. Those of us who were intimately associat ed with him knew of many of his good deeds; but God alone kn the whole extent of them. His life as a Soldier had much to do in moulding his character. At the age of fifteen, on April 27, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company E of the celebrated Bethel First North Carolina Regi ment. In February, 1805, in Charleston, S. C, the rank of Lieutenant was conferred upon him for special services rendered . He was a brave Confederate sol dier and was passioately devoted to the cause of the Confederacy. The personal influence he ex erted was far greater than appear ance indicated. No sacrifice was too great for him to make in be half of a friend. He would have been willing to lay down his life for his faith in Christ, for his life was hid with Christ in God. All who habitually listened to his sermons agree that he was pre eminent as a preacher. We doubt whether the Diocese of North Carolina ever produced a man mere gifted or more intellectual. If he had desired preferment, he might have attained the highest honors the Church could give. He had many of the character istics which would have madehim a great Bishop. In this Paris and county, and in every congregation where he min istered, he laid foundations broad and deep. Other men may build upon these foundations and reap the fruit of his labors. His life waB an .incessantly busy aud ac tive one, bit not long enough to enable him to carry out his plans. He was taken away suddenly, but we feel sure he was ready lor the call. . Francis Johnstone Murdoch was born in Buncombe County, N. C.,s March 17th, 1846; confirmed, in Asheville, Sept. 18, 1864; licensed aslayreader, Feb. 8th, 1867; or dained deacon in St, Luke's Church, Salisbury N. C, Sept. 17 1868 ; ordained priest, in Eden ton, N.-C, May 8, 1870. He was confirmed, licensed as lay-reader, and ordained deacon and priest by Bishop Atkinson. He f iltered upon his duties as Rectorof this Parish on St. Peter's Day, June 29, 1872, and continued as Rector for thirty-seven years. He represent ed the Diocese in the last seven General Conventions . The de gree of S. T. D. was conferred up on him in. 1890 by the University of the South. He died at the Murdoch home in Charleston,, C, on Monday, June 21, 1909, at 11 ;15 p, m In th.erdw.th of our pastor, each member o1 the vestry teels a per sonal loss, To the widow and family of the deceased, we give our deepest and tenderest sympa thy; aud we pray that God w;ll convert and bless them in this their time of trial and distress. They know and we know how faithfully he labored for Christ ai d his Church. May he rest in peace, and let light perpetual shine upon him. John S. Henderson, S. W. : Steph en F. Lord, J.
