THE CAROLINA WATCHMAN WM. H. STB WAR r, Ed. and Prop. Published every Tuesday at 120 West Innea street. Salisbuby, N. C, August 17, 1909. Since the Board of County Com missioners have decided to macad amize several miles of private roadway leading to the toll-bridge, it would be wise, it seem to us, to buy the bridge and make it a free crossing. But, if the bridge can not be purchased at a reasonable figure, then its owners should be compelled to contribute something towar! the improvement of this road. Or, if-any of the above is impracticable, it might be well to arrange for a bridge, or crossing elsewhere. willtsertainly.be a game. So let everybody come and bring their friends and we will have a grand old time., There wiU be an excursion to Greensboro August 31st, and 1 guess there will be a large crowd that will go from around here. I will name a few who are going to to get a job. They are : Herbert Kiuttz, Marcus and Joha Lyerly and Clarence Brown. We wish them much success ud hope that they will not forget their old friends and come back to see them. Jake, Isn't that Alabama law the real thing? Those people have been made wise, a thing the morally stunted are now doing ior North Carolinians. The clubs and "ni" beer saloons will prove quite an effectual club in the "ni" future. N rth Carolina and her good peo ple have always proven equal to any emergency and it is 'folly to suppose that the great majority behind this measure are going to surrender any part of the victories won or advantages obtained so far. Our advice to the man who wants to do a saloon business is to shake the dost off his feet, leave North Carolina and, wherever he puts up, keep his chattels well in hand pre paratory for moving at a moment's notice. Alcoholism, consumption and smallpox are three items the Ameiican people have about de cided to be rid of. SOLD KNOB. August 16. The health of this community is very good at this writing. There will be a ball game at Biltmore Saturday evening, Au gust 21st, between Gold Knob and some other team, just what team has not been decided, but there GRAHAM X ROADS. Aug, 14. Farmers are taking advantage of the good rains we had last week in breaking wheat and oats land. Will Briggs was visiting friends for the last few weeks op on Cool River. Mr. Colley put a new roof on his house. He also put up a ehan ty down in the woods where he keeps some hands who tends to his strawberries and to other im portant things. John Hex's little child which was confined for several weeks to its bed with feyer is somewhat better at this time . W. G. Honeycntt and wife and two daughters, of Cabarrus coun ty, were visiting her father at Sa lem, the past week. Last Sunday was communion day at Salbm. It was a fine day. Preaching Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A large congregation was out Sunday. A large-number of people communed and nine were attached to the church Sun day. The 25th arrd 26th is the county convention at Salem . Everybody is invited. All bring a big basket of dinner. A large crowd will be out. Miss Mary Brown will take charge of the Salem school this winter as firBt teacher and we con gratulate her for accepting that place, as she is well fitted for the place, aud is a fine educated young lady, - There is more gold in the firpt. six inches of the surface soil than in all the mines in C-vifornia. A big farm sets too many chairs to the dinner table. Take care of the chip and you will never be without a fire. Little seeds make tall woed; but tall weeds make short corn. A m rtgage on tbe- farm is har der to dig out than a sod of viiue grass. , Waste leads to want and wai;t leads to ruin.
