Harris Mallinkrodt, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal church of Charlotte, conducted services at St. Luke's church Sunday morn- ing and evening. He has arge and interested congregations at each service. Work on the Grubb building is being delayed for lack of material. At a recent meeting of the di rectors of the Salisbury Cotton Mills, J. M. Kuox was elected president to fill out the unexpired term of the late Rev. Francis J. Murdoch. The selection was a very appropriate one. Plans for tho Cress building, to be erected at the corner of South Main aud West Bank-streets, are now in the hands of the contrac tors for bide. As soon as the suc cessful bidder is known the work of erection will begin. Prof. William Goodman, while at the depot Saturday evening making efforts to collect an ac count from a negro, was struck in the head aud received quite a se vere cut. Gaithor of Cleveland, came in late last Tuesday night with an armful of burglars and gamblers, four in all. Three of these had a few nights before entered the house of Ben McDauiel's at Bear Popiar. Atwell Township, and appropria ted to their own use a number of articles belonging to Mr. McDan iel, among which were some meat, clothing and a pocket knife, the latter article being their undoing. One of the trio swapped the kuife and by some means it found its way into the hands of Deputy Sheriff Joe H. Mingus, who com municated with Deputy Gaither, and between them the knife was in dentified and itssource was traced to one of the theives. This led to i the arrest of Arthur Krider. Jim ' Clement and John -Hudson, all colored. One was captured at County Line, one at Cleveland, ! . and one at Bear Poplar. They were placed in jail to await the August term of the Rowan Su perior Court. Two other negroes were brought ; down trom Cleveland and are being held for Courtcharged with j . i gambling. A Good Woman passes oyer the River, Mrs. Margaret E.- Holshouser, relict of the late Wiley Holshous er, who has been making her home in Spencer for sometime. but of late with her son-in-law, J. K. P Heilig, in Salisbury, died at hi home Monday evening at 7 o'clock. Mrs. Holshouser was about 83 years of age and leaves three sons aud three daughters to mourn her loss. Her children are among the best citizens of thf I county and consists of the fol lowing: William, Henry, John aud Laura C. Holshouser, Mrs Harriet Morgan and Mrs, Lucin da J. Heilig, and a large num ber of grandchildren. The funeral will take place at St. Paul's Lutheran church, near her old home, to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock, and the interment will be iu the graveyard near the church, Rev. J. L. Morgan, of Chesnut Hill, officiating. She has been a member of St. Paul's for more than forty years and was a consecrated woman, loved by all who knew her. at tbe Combination Rowan Superior Court Opens Monday, Aug ust. 30th. . The August term of the Rowan Superior Court will open Mouday morning, August 80th, with Jubge B . F. Long presiding, The dock et consists of 17 judgments to be signed, 43 cases on the trial dock et, 110 cases on the motion docket besides thetrials of criminal cases, which, since the organization of t.ha County Court, will not take up a great deal of time. There are no very important cases on the docket and a quiet, short ses sion is to be expected. Another Suspec. A Raleigh special of the 13tb, to the Charlotte Observer, tells the following story : 'A telegram from Governor Swanson, of Virginia, to Governor Kitchen of North Carolina, re ceived this evening sayB : "There is a man in Chesterfield county jail who says his name is John Hudson, and officers here think he is wanted in North' Carolina for murder of a policeman in Salis bury. Siill at Large. The insane man who made his escape fromofficers near Elmwood, lat Saturday, has not been locat ed. A couple of officers of Hen dersonville were takiugthemau to the department at Raleigh for the criminal insane. Just this sido of Elmwood the prisoner made a dive out of the coach window and disappeared from view. Sunday night while on his rn-j gme was taking water at the tank i at Spartanburg,' the fireman, a man named Mooney who' lives in Concord, was struck by lightning and seriously, if not fatally injur ed. The wife of the injured man was visiting friends here and left on the first train Monday morning in response to a telegram inform ing her of the accident. An Unexpected Vlrit. John Wesley Hegeman, of Plain-1" field, N. J., was coming south from Greensboro, laBt Sunday morning on the New York and New Orleans Limited. He intend ed changing cars here and going to Asheville. He was in the din ing car enjoying a good breakfast when the train reached Salisbury and he failed to note the voice of the porter telling the passengers for the west to change at Salis bury. When he finished his morning qeal and walked back to the Pullman in which reposed his suit case and other impedimenta, he was surprised to find that it had mysteriously vanished, Upon consulting with the conductor he found that his car had been taken off at Salisbury and was then some distance on its way to the "Land of the Sky." He went on to Concord, got another train there and returned to this city. Finding that he was ditched for several hours, Mr. Hegeman found the way to St. Luke's church where he had the pleasure of hear ing n excellent sermon by Rev Harris Mallinkrodt, of Charlotte He was taken in tow by a citizen and walked about over the city for an hour or so. The gentleman was realy glad that the mishap had occurred, as it gave him an opportunity, as he expressed it, "of seeing something of an old town of which I have so- often heard." He left at 2:50 for Ashe ville, being delighted with what he Baw of the brightest jewel in the galaxy of North Carolina cities. The Firet Baptist Church is ar- rauging for the installation of a j handsome pipe organ. It is ex pected that the organ will be in place by the middle of Septem ber. The Crime of idleness.
