SALISBURY FRIDAY OCT. 1 THE GrEEAT SELLS-FLOTO SHOWS OONSOLIDA-TED The Case of Express Messenger Turner. Geo P. Turner, the former ex press messenger, on the Western road, who plead guilty in Rowan Superior Court to the theft of money being transmitted by the company, and was sentenced to three and a half years in the peni tentiary, stated, before sentence was passed, that he was Bick and drinking heavily, and did not rea lize what he was doing. The money was taken on the trip from Knoxville to Salisbury August 17, after Turner had been set off ac count of the condition of his re cords on the trip and whila he was helping the new man (Yerwood), who had relieved him. Eight packages were taken, the total amount being $5,672. Of this $3, 285 was in checks, which Turner afterwards burned. The company recovered, by the help of Turner, $2,242, leaving only a net loss of $145. When con fronted with the charge of theft Turner confessed and told where the money could be found. Some of it was in Salisbury and some in a barn at his father s home at Grover, Cleveland countv. Some was buried on a farm in South Carolna. Turner has a wife and baby and these, with his father and other relatives, were with him in court. Soliatarj Prisoner For 32 Years' Jesse Pomeroy, who is known as the most notorious life prisoner in America, today began the 33rd year of his confinement in the State prison in Ch ar 1 e s t o n When he was 14 years old Pomeroy was sentenced to solitary confine ment for life for torturing and murdering little children. Since the gates of the prison closed be hind him 82 years ago he has seen no human face except that of his mother, who has been permitted to visit him at rare intervals. Even his food has been passed to him by unseen hands. His exer cise has been confined to a small corridor set aside for his exclusive use . He has never required the attendance of a physician during his long confinement, nor has he ever requested to see the prison chaplain. Despite his long incar ceration, Pomeroy is said to still have hopes of a pardon, though he has never been given the slighest encouragement. No Country Boys in toe Jackson Training School. J. P. Cook, chairman of the board of trustees of the Jackson Training School, made a remark able statement at Hendersonville last week, while addressing the county superintendents in the in terest of the school, Our readers are aware that this institution is established for the young uoys whose parents cannot or do not control them. The courts send young offenders here, and they are trained for useful citizenship, The statement Mr, Cook made was that of 45 boys in the school, not a single one is from the coun try. Eighty-two per cent . of the people of North Carolina live in the country, and yet the 82 per cent . have no representative in the school for bad boys. This does not mean that all the bad boys are in the towns, but it does mean that there is more trouble with the town boys when it comes to discipline and training than with the country boy.
