C, Sept. 24th, 1909 SHORT LOCAL ITEMS Owing to a brake down of one of theboilers at the Spencer shops, Saturday morning, nearly all of the workmen were laid off at 11 o'clock for the ramainder of the day. The necessay repairs were made, and operations resumed Monday morning. W. A. and J. E. Hennessee will leaye on the fourth of Octoder for an extended Automobile tour through South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. They will visit Atlanta, Chattanooga and other cities and will be gone for about two weeks. The old Shober bridge, which crosses the Weston Railroad on North Ellis Street, is being torn away and will be replaced by a new bridge. The old one has been in bad shape for sometime. A crane loaded on a flat-car struck it last Thustday and badly de molished it, making its immediate rebuilding necessary. Sheriff McKenzie, who had in tended going to Chattanooga Wednesday with' Eb Scales, who was to identify the negro who has been held there as the suspected murderer of Conductor Wiggins, received a letter with a photograph of the negro Wednesday and show ed it to Mr Scales, who said at once that it was Dot Ed. Davis, the man wanted. John Freman who was convicted of whiskey selling at Spencer, was given two options by his honor Judge Miller he could take four mounths in each of six cases in which he waB convicted making in all two years cn the road, or he could go to the roads for four mounths and pay a fine of $1,000, The sentence has been pending all this week and Wednesday he was sent to the road to begin his work. If within four mounths he pays the fine he will be liberated, other wise he will serve the two years. CUPID'S BUSY DAYS. J. Holmes, a young man of splendid business qualities and deservedly popular with all who know him. . He is a member of the firm of Holmes & Overman. The bride is one of Greensboro's fairest daughters and is connected with some of the best people of the State, and will be warmly wel comed by the many friends of the groom in Salisbury. Miss Margaret Hatcher and E. Jed Roseman were married Wed nesday night, at eight o'clock, at the parsonage of the First Metho dist Church, Rev. S. B, Turren tine officiating. This was really a surprise wedding, onlv two wit nesses besides the minister being present. After the vows were tak en the couple took the 9 o'clock train to Washington and New York where they will spend their honeymoon. The bride is a train ed nurse, a graduate from the Whitehead-Stokes sanatorium Recently she has devoted much of her time to private nursing. She is a charmiDg young woman and has many friends here. Mr. Rose man is a native Salisburian and stands high with every one who knows him. He is connected with the firm of W. M. Harris & Co., and is interested in a number of other enterprises. They will re turn to Salisbury in about ten days. A marrige which was witnessed Ity only a few friends, was solem nized Wednesday night, at 8:30 o'clock, at the home of' M. S". Varner. The contracting parties being Clark Pendleton, a popular young employe of the Spencer shops, and Miss Cotneha Earn hardt, a sister of MrB . Varner. The Ceremony was performed by Rev. Byron Clark, of the First Presbyterian church. After spen ding their honeymoon in Tenne&aael they will take up their residence at the home of the groom's mother, on South Lee Stseet. A wedding which will be of much interest to the people of Salisbury will take place in Morehead City on Tuesday, Sep tember 28th, when Miss Lala Hauser becomes the bride of J. B. Moore. Miss Hauser is one of MoreheacPs fairest young women, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Hauser. She is well known in Salisbury, having spent several winters here with her aunt, Mrs. Jno. L. Brown, and has a host of friends here. Mr. Moore is a prominent business manof Wilson. Salisbury to hat e Car in the Parade. That Salisbury wi'l have one or more cars in the reliability test from New York to Atlanta was definitly decided upon Satur day at a conference between W. T. Waters, of the Atlanta Journal, and a number of leading Salis- fburians. Chas. W. Smith's car will be taken to New York in advance aud he wiJl leave New York as oue of the party. It will be kuowu as the Salisbury Car, driven un der the auspices of the Salisbury board of trade. Streamers will be hung fiom it telling in a few words something of Salisbury and Rowan county. It is probable that one or more cars will go from here, and that the party will be entertained here on Saturday, October 30th. WORK OF THE REAPER. Mrs. T. Scott Watson, nee Miss Florence, daughter of the late J. W. McKenzie, is critically ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. Rob ert Gill, between Salisbury and Speucer. Oue of the largest f uueral par ties that ever left Spsncer went to High Point Sunday afternoon to attend the burial of Engineer Sebe Perry of Spencer, who met death at'Xyuchburg last Thursday night by either jumping or falling from a locomotive which he was run ning. The party composed of about two hundred of Spencer's citizens left at noon and returned tb samo evening on a special train generously furnished by the Southern Railway Company through its superintendent, RN L. Avery, of Spencer. The locomo tive wa in charge of Engineer John P Wingate, a bosom friend of the dead engineer, Mr. Perry, was draped in mourning as were aisi tha coaches which were under Cupt. W. S. Freemau as conduc tor. The funeral whi:h was con ducted by Rev. J. M. Dunaway of Spencer, together with the B. of L. E. exercises, were attended by a crowd estimated at five thous and people attesting the high es teem in which Mr. Perry was held in his home town and at High : Point. Sixty-two brother engi neers were present at the funeral 'and participated in the ceremon ies. The paH bearers, all of whom wore engineers, were: Joe Stead man, John Wingate, N. S. Hun ger, G. W. Robiuson, John Per- kinson and J. C. Small. The flo ral offerings, among which was a beautiful design from theB. of L. E . were borne to the grave by former associates of Mr Perry. Mrs. Thos. M. Earnhardt died Sunday evening at 6:45 o'clock at Mr. Earnhardt's home in East Speucer. Mrs. Earnhardt has been a lon sufferer from an in curable malady but has borne her affliction with christian fortitude. She was a splendid woman, a de voted wife aud mother and all who enjoyed her friendship bub tam a personal bereavement in her death. Mrs. Earnhardt was 54 years old and is survived by her husband, one of East Spen cer's leading citizens, and one daughter, Mrs. Joe Trexler. .
