This sermon will have special re fereuce to oducation in our public schools. We trust that a'l the patrons and teachers of the school at Faith and also from other schools may be present to hear it. M. A. Powlr.ss, one of the lead iug and best farmers in Franklin Township, has just completed a nice two-story dwelling, and mov ed into it last Thursday. Mr Powlass' farm ii one of the best in thu couuty, it shows thoroughness and skill and is a thing of beauty to look upon. A small house on Liberty Btreet, in the rear of the old jail, was burned Wednesday night. The house was occupied by that well known old colored man, Joe Ballaid, who, we understand, lo3t all of his household grcds. This is the second time Uncle Joe has been burned out recently, he hav ing lost his house in tho southern suburbs of this city a short time ago, ana tnis lose rails neaviiy upon him. J. E. Hennessee has been quite ill for several days at his home on North Jackson Street. We are sorry to chronicle the severe illness of Victor Wallace at his home on South Main Street. He has been sick for several days and there has been little if any improvement iu his condition. He is quite aged and his family and his many friends are natural ly uneasy, and will hear with pleasure any news of improve ment in his condition. The district assembly of the Rebeckahs met here on Saturday and held an afternoon and night session in thehall of Cordon Lodge, I. O. O. F. Delegates were here from Winston-Salem, Southern Pines, Hickory and a number of other points. Dr. L S. Fox de livered the address of welcomo and before adjourning jvt night a very pleasaut social session was held. At the afternoon sessioi, officers were elected for the year. R L. Barringer, who recently sold his farm in the county and moved to Skipwith, Va., haa made another change. His family did not like conditions in the Old Dominion, so he now sojourns at Hiddeuite, N. C Mr,Barriugr is a good farmer and a sple1 d d citizen and has many friends here who with him much success in his new home. airs, trances inruan nas been quite sick at her home for a wfe-k or more, and was only slightly improved on Monday. Emmett Cruse, son of chief of police, J. N Cruse, of Spencer, who has been with R. W. Price in his meat market for some time, has bought the business and good will ot the Dorsett meat market at Sponcer. He will make some improvements and continue the bus:ness in the same place, next to the post office. He took charge Monday. Railroad Shops at Newbern Burned. News was received here on Sat urday of the destruction by fire of the Norfolk and Southern Railway shops at Newbern about 2:30 on Saturday morning. The machine shop and round house, boiler sh p and almost the whole plant was burneJ, throwing about 150 men out of employment and causing a l ss of about a quarter of a million of dollars, partially covered by insurance. This comes as a seri ous blow to the road as they had made extensive improvements an shops and on the road, buildins bridges tresaels and so on, audi were j ajt getting in shape to handle the bus ness in that section of the 1 State, but we understand that thej' will go to work at once to robuild and it is to be hoped that wheu they have had time to look rouud they will find that most if uot all this machinery is in condition so that it can be used. Jas. F. Cuthrell is foreman in the shops that were burned, and several Salisburians have worked there during the past two years. Julian which took place from St John's Lutheran church, at 3 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, was one of the largest attended funerals held here for some time. Quite a number failed of admission to the church and waited outside until the services were over, and, beside tho large number of carriages and other vehicles in the procession to the cemetery two street cars were provided to carry those who wish ed to go. The services were conducted bv his pastor, Dr, M. M. Kiuard, who, after reading the burial-ser vice of the Lutheran church, made a short talk in which he paid a well deserved tribute too the life and character of the deceased. The interment was in Chestnut Hill cemetery. The police force of the city attended in a body, in respect for chief of police, D. W. Julian, son of the deceased. The church council were honorary pall-bearers, Mr. Julian having been one of the officers for a num ber of years. The active pall bearers were intimate friends cf Mr. Julian. They were Senator Lee S. Overmau, A. H. Boyden, L. H. Clement, J. F. McCubbins, A. M, Rice, J. D. Norwood, N. B . Mc Canless and P. H Thompson. The casket was canopied with the moBt exquisite designs and the flowers was of such quantity as to require an extra carriage to con vey them to the cemetery. The large attendance at the funeral and the al undance of flowers of fered testified iu how great estsem the deceased was held by the peo ple of Salisbury and Rowan coun ty. hurried at the Lutheran Cemetery. She leaves one daughter, Mibs Ada, a very estimable young woman who has been her support and comfort through the years that have passed since tho death of her husband, upon whom her loss falls heavily. Pain FjuP Hay's jjzjd gQffffi Work of the Reaper. Rowan County had t first death from pellagra in tho case of Mrs. Julius A. Peeler, who lived at 310 South Ellis Street. Mrs. Peeler has been iu bad health for a num ber of years. It was genrally supposed that she was a victim of the white plauge and her friends were hardly prepared for the an nouncement that she had died from the effects of pellagra. The funeral waslheld at the First Bap tist church at 4 o'clock on Sunday afternoon and the remains were For sore throat, sharp pain in lungs, tightness across the chest, hoarseness or cough, lave the parts with Sloan's Liniment.
