THE ONLY BAKING POWDER MADE FROM ROYAL CRAPE CREAM OF TARTAR Mhsotetety Pare - STAESVILLE AND IREDELL COUNTY. Bread From Cotton Seed Meal. Mr. Pat terson Will Move to Salisbury. Statesville Landmark, Marh 15-18 County Treasurer Sloan ia still confined to hie home on account of his afflicted hand! The hand bealed, as the result of an electric shock, and it was found necessary to lance it in eight places. O. F. Englebirt, and employe of the North State Veneer Com pany, was painfully and probably seriously injured yesterday morn ing while at work at the veneer plant. Mr. Englebirt was oper ating a rip-saw when a piece of .timber was caught by the teeth of the saw and hurled against hi stomach with terrific force, The skin was not broken hy the blow, but Mr. Englebirt has Buffered in tense pain and it is feared that he haB been injured internally. Fire of unknown origin wastrdi8 cc vered in the southeait wing of the Imperial Furniture Compa ny's plant.Wednesday night abou 10 o'clock aud ibefore the flames could be checked the upper story of that portion of the building was gutted and considerable dam age done. The quick work of em ploves of the plant, who used the private fire fighting apparatus very effectively, and the prompt ness of the city fire department, which soon had a stream playing on the flames, saved the building from total destruction. The dam agy as it is, from fire and water, will amount to several thousand dollars. The loss is covered by insurance. Messrs. J. Conner and J. Clande Patterson, of Statesville, who are stockholders iD-the HolmeB-Cathey Company, the new concern which will conduct a harness and ve hide business at Salisbury. went to Salisbury Wednesday to assist J, P , Cathey in "starting off" the business, Mr, Pattarson, wiio was formerly with the Flani gan Harness Company, will have charge of the harness department of the new business and will make his home in Salisbury. Mr. Cathey, who has been with a Sal isbury firm for some time, and re cently moved his family there, will be in charge of the the ve hicle department. Mr. Conner will not be actively associated with the conduct of the business at Salisbury, but will remain with the Harness, Vehicle & Supply Co. in Statesville. M. W. White, of Mooresville, who returned Wednesday night from a visit to Texas, sends The Landmark, Ly the hands of J. F. Anderson, a sample of bread and cake made in Texas from cotton seed meal. The bread, which is about two-thirds cotton seed meal and one-third flour, resembles br-ad made from Graham flour, being almost as dark as a ginger cake, but is said to be very pala table. The cake sent The Land mark is a piece of fruit cako and is made almost entirely from the cotton seed meal, only a? little flour being UBed. Where the meal is being used doughnut a are made entirely from it, ro flour being mad. Time wilt b o necessary to allay the natural prejudice, but if the idea of cottci: sed meal for bread is pushed ' meal will soon become an imp it ant factor in bread making. If palatable and healthful, thr color willhave lit tle weight pr' or cne'gets used to it. Mrs. Ann Beaver, wife of L.A. F ded quite suddenly rd : ..cotedly early Sunday v . & at her home in Cool hiring township;' death resulting from mbU indigestion. Mrs. VICTIM OF A BRUTAL ASSAULT. Found at the Home of Jake Coble Welter ing in His Own Blood. Greensboro, March 18. Johii M. Staley, who lived at Julian, 15 miles south of Greensboro, died at St. Leo's hospital in this city this morning from the effects of a murderous assault committed upon him Sunday afternoon. Tho crime appears to be shrouded in mystery, but warrants have been issued for three men who are under strong suspicion. They are: Jake Coble and his so Wade Coble, and a negro named Albert Ryan . Stalwy, who was 50 years old, and a man without family, resided with a brother near the village of Julian. He left home Saturday evening and his relatives heard nothing more of him until Son- day afternoon, when they ascer tained that he was lying at the home of a neighbor, Jake Coble, badly wounded and unconscious. This information was derived from the fact that Coble had sent one of his sons for a physician to at tend the wounded man . When the brother reached the Coble home he found John Staley in his own blood, mere dead than ilive. There was blood on the floor of the rooigj, and there were other cirenmstances tending to sh w that a foul crime had been com mitted on the Coble premises. Coble told a story of the wound ed man having been brought to his house by his son, Wade, and avered that he was looking after him as a matter of humanity. The wounded man did not regain consciousness and of course wae unable to tell anything of the tragedy . He had been struck across the head with a blunt weapon and beaten about the body, the blow on the head caus ing a fractue of the skull. Char lotte Observer. One of the chief needs of our country to-day is respect for au thority. This need is apparent in Church and State. Nowadays the most solemn deliverances of tribunals are sharplv questioned, the most emphatic order of offici als are flouted. Reokless men are quick to make baseleis asser tions that bring into contempt the highest offiaiary, Still more reckless persons go beyond words and defy all authority. And tbt deepest pity is that the utterances of suspicion have the ear of many good people; and the defiers of authority have, if not sympathy of true men, at least some who make excuses f r their inexcusa ble lawlessness. All this is a great evil and widespread and bad men are more and morr tak ing advantage of it. The result is deplorable in Church and State and the worst is not yet. South em Christian Advocate. A stipulation in th9 bill of lad ing of a railroad that unless a claim for damages for damaged or lost freight is filed with the rail road within 80 days after the freight is delivered, the railroad is not responsible for the damage or loss, is held to be void by the State Supreme Court, in the case of Dean and Brown vs. Railroad Company. Judge Manning, who wrote the opinion for the court, Btates that such a stipulation is unreasonable and contravenes public policy and is void. It expels all poisons, stimulates the internal organs, cleanses the the system and purifies the blood. Such is Hollister's Rocky Moun tain Tea, the most effective pre ventative and qye of. bad blood, constipation and sluggish liver.
