THE CAROLINA WATCHMAN.
Salisbury, N.G., April 6th, 1910
AN OLD HOMESTEAD BURNS.
The Torrence Mansion on the Heights ot
Gowerie has Passed Away.
Another of Rowaus old land
marks went up in smoke on Satur
day night when the fine old resi
dence on top of the hill known as
the heights of Gkmerie, at Trading
Ford on the Yadkin river, eight
milee east of Salisbury, was
was destroyed by fire. This
house was built by some one of
the wealthy families of that
neighborhood more than a hun
dr d years ago and wa finished
in walnut and plaster, but in the
last 25 years has been badly use
and allowed to go to decay. Some
tenant or owner of it, in an effort
to repair and improve it, had a
coat of paint put on all of the
walnut doors and waiuscoating.
No one knows how the fire origin
ated and nothing much was sav
ed, tbe parties living in it barely
escaping with a small amount cf
wearing apparel.
From several notes found in
Rumple's history of Rowan we
reproduce the following as of most
interest at this time
"Just below the Trading Ford,
on a hierh blun. stocd the resi-
deuce of Albert Torrence. The
h use is still conspicuous from
afar, and has been named of latt
y ars by a poetical friend, "The
H-ights of Gowerie." It was
from these "heights" that Lord
Corawallis's artillery cannonaded
Gun. Greene while wiiting his
dispatches in the cabin on the
othtr side of the Yadkin. Albert
Torrence, an Irishman, chose the
airy situation for his residence,
and from the edge of the bluff he
could watch the windings of the
silver stream, dotted with a clus
ter af beautiful islets, and beyond
could see lying the fertile farms
of the famed Jersey Settlement.
Albert Torrence married Eliza
beth Hackett of Rowan county.
In this family there grew up four
- sons and one daughter.
the eldest son married a Miss Sim
onton of Statesvil'.e, and died
rly. Albert married "adaught- jFaita to Organ Church to furnish
of Judge Toomer of FayafcfltJ free r"ck hauling, 34 aa work
6R
er of Judge Toomer of Fayattii
vi lie, and settled in that city.
J times died young, unarles mar
ried first Miss Elizabeth L. Hays
of Rowan county, and after her
doath, Mis3 Philadelphia Fox, of
C. arlotte. iHis residence was
scut-h east of Charlotte, on th
Pjuvideuce road, about a mile
fr )m the public square. The
daughter of Albert Torrence mar
rif d Vm. E. Powe of Cheraw, and
sealed at the Bruner place five
m '- east of Salisbury on thj
Cl -rubers' Ferry Road, where
tb v reared a large family of sons
8i: s daughters, only two of whom
n- 'iain in Rowan Dr. Albert
v
T( rrnnce Powe, and hiB sister.
M Hackett, who reside at the
family homestead. At the organ
iz j ion of the Pre9byterianTJhurch
in Salisbury, Albert Torrence be
came a member, and one of the
first bench of Elders. His re
mains, with those of his wife and
several of their children, and of
Mr. Powe, are sleeping in the
Ei lish graveyard in Salisbury,
ui.dr broad marble slabs, near
tbf; entrance. Albert Torrence
di d in 1825, aged 72 ,years."
Tbe following beautiful poem
wi written by Dr. Isaac Jones,
af tr visiting the place with Al
bert Torreuce's daughter, Mrs.
Vra. E. Powe:
HEIGHTS OF GOWERIE.
Pensive I stand on Gowerie's height,
Ail bathed in autumn's mellow light; ,
My childhood's happy home;
- Where Yadkin rolls its tide along-.
With many a wail and mournful song,
A !i a 1 1 r
As its waters dash and foam.
And memory's harp tunes all its
, strings,
When I catch the dirge the river
sings,
As it sweeps by Gowerie's side.
And viewless tongues oft speak to
me,
Some in sorrow and some in glee,
From the river's fitful tide.
On yon isle, just up the river,
Where sunbeams dance and leaflets
quiver,
Three fancied forms I see,
That blest that sainted trio band,
Together walk adown the strand,
And wave their hands at me.
A father 'tis, whom yet I mourn,
And sisters two, who long have
gone
Gone to the other shore.
They beck me to the goodly land,
Where, with them, I'll walk hand in
hand,
Ne'er to be parted more.
When from the fount hard by the mill,
Just at the foot of Gowerie's hill,
I drink the sparkling water;
Echoes from yon cedar grove,
From which the sighing zephyrs rove, I
Say, come to me, my daughter."

The Tenderfoot Farmer
It was one of these experimental farmers, who put green
spectacles on his cow and fed her shavings. His theory
was that it d:dn't matter what the cow ate so long as she
was fed. The questions of digestion and nourishment had
not entered into his calculations.

Clean-up Day Observed.
April 1st was pretty generally
observed in Salisbury as a clean-np
day. Yards, back lots and other
places where trash accumulates,
were looked after and the d'rt
gathered and placed on the Bide
walk in front ot the premises
where wagons, furnished by the
city, called for it and hauled it
away. A force of hands with sev
eral sections of hose from the fire
department were busy all day
washing the the paved streets and
and sidewalks in the business sec
tion . All of the cemeteries in
the city had been given a thorough
cleaning by the committee on
cemeteries. Much of the filth has
been removes from the city and
much good has been done. Many
hope the good work will be kept
up.
