The county pays half of the cost for these houses and the school district the balance. News was received here on Fri day of the death of Mrs D. Carson Lingle, which occurred in Greens boro where sbe had just been op erated on for cancer, Mrs. Lingle had been suffering for some months with the trouble and only submitted to the operation as a last hop. Her remains were brought to Salisbury on Friday night, were taken from here to her home and the funeral was heJo from Christiana church oa Sun day morning ia the presence of a large number cf friends and rel atives. She is survived by a hus band, three daughters and two sons. The death of this good lady is rendered all the more sad by the fact that her husband has re centlj had a relapse of a nervous trouble for which he has been treated at the State Hospital at atMorganton. Application ha? been made for his re-Admission to that institution John Safrit, a young man ol the St. Paul neighborhood, wa bitten by a snake while gathering up some leaves at home on Satur day afternoon. The snake bit him on the hand and soon th hand and arm were badly swolen and he was reported to be iu a serious condition on Monday. This is only one of several cases of snakes biting people this sum mer. Owing to the mild winter there seems to be an abuudance of snakes this season, they do not care any thing about the prohi bition law. Ueetiog of City Aldermen. The i city aldermon met on Thursday night nd much busi ness of importance to the city was transacted, among which was the adoption of the all night lighting system. The moonlight schedule has been tried for the past month aud has proved unsatisfactory. Many oumplaints have been made, and, while the city fathers wish to run the affairs of the city as economically as is possible they felt that it was their duty to com ply with the demands of the peo ple tc restore the all night system of lighting.' , Alderman F. M. Thompson car ried a very important point rela tive to unclaimed articles and property taken from prisoners by the policemen . The law in regard to this shall be enforced. The chief of police shall keep a record ;t' all valuables of whatever char acter taken frcm prisoners, they shall be turned over to him by the officer making the arrest and shall be returned to the owner. All unclaimed articles shall be adver tised and Bold, The bond of chief of police and city tax collector, Jerry M. Brown, which is $10,000, was presented and accepted. The bond of city clerk Stahle Liun was fixed at $1,000. The oond of city treasurer R. W. Prico at $20,000. These bonds will be given at the next regular meeting of the beard. Alderman Thompson formerly tendered to the Board the resig nation of A. H. Boyden as a nembt r of the city school board. The resignation was accepted with regret and expressions ol appreci ation for services rendered. Al derman J. Samuel McCubbius stated that Mr. Boyden desired Friuk R, Brown to be bis success or, and he moved Mr. Brown's el ection Carried. The ordinance relative to imuz- zliutr doss did not pass. The revenue act, which included a special ordinance on near-beer, was put on its second and finai reading. After discussion the act was passed and becomes a law.
