Everything was so arranged as to have the visitors on the ground without the knowledge of either . He had often remarked that a whole community could not be cognizant of such a thing without his catohing on to the maneuver ing ; but this is one of the times in which he was completely trapped. This thing had been going on for weeks, and before his eyes, and still he never caught on. The girls were so nice in sweeping the yard, etc.. that he reproved them for their unnecessary work, and while Charley knew all about it, he said they had better be at work where it would do some good. This was an ecouragement to the girls, but a blindfold to Mr, Lin-gle. But they knew he mu9t go to Salisbury on Saturday, and how to get him back in time was the trouble. To overcome this they proposed to viBit his son, Rv. George Lingle, that evening, and muBt start from his houe by half past one. While in Salisbury, his friends insisted on him staying for a committee meeting in the afternoon, but no, he could not stay for he was going on a visit that evening, but he would vote by proxy. By the time he pot .- . . . . nome tnese very mends were on the grounds with him. When he drove up there was a great crowd present, (his son, Rev. George, with them) and while everybody else were laugh ing, he had but a queer smile, and was rather slow to get out of the buggy. Mrs. Lingle had been making arrangements for a regular family dinner, and whan some of the neighbors came in, she said she did not know what to do if they stayed all day because they were going to see their son George and family that evening, and wanted to get an early start, so the ladies had to give her gome information, but this only seemed to excite her more . A large table was soon prepared and abundantly filled with the best of provisions, when a sum mons was given we surrounded the table, and after getting Mr. and Mrs. Lingle in pluce, Rev. li. L. Brown read some verses pre pared especially for the occasion, after a blessing was asked by Rev, J. A. Linn, and after a hearty in vitation from Mr, Lingle and his wife to join them, we made a bold and neroic attact on tne provi sions, but in this we failed, after all had done their best, we noticed a full surrender of the job while much remained unconquered. After dinner Walter Murphy and A. H. Boyden, each addressed the couple with a few words of pleasantness, cheer, appreciation and congratulation. We know these men are amply able to ad dress an audience whenever called upon, but were somewhat surprised to hear them do so well when so full of such excellent rations. The coupld also received a lege lot of very nice presents, besides some boxes of cigars and many other valuables, there was a nice fine suit of clothes, Just how much all amounted to we do not know, and while the crowd was large we cannot give the exact number present, but with the neighbors and many nearby friends who were there, there was a fair representation from Salis bury. Among these were J. D. Brown, bis wife and son, the sheriff, the ex-mayor and a part of the bar, with a number of oth ers the writer is not able to name. After dinner was over the young people engaged in their pleasure, and, while Mr. Lingle enjoyed himself with some of the flue ci gars just received, it was our pleasure to tease him about his inability to catch on to the secrets that were all around him. Many things were said and done that left ample ground for suspicion, and in some things he was a little inquisitive, but in spite of all he was kept in the dark, and taken completely by surprise. To ba sure, it was a day of pleasure and social gathering, and after all the rush and rumble to get from Salisbury m time to take that pleasure trip, ho did not get off. X X. X.
