It is said the primary survej f or the interurban trolley line to connect the cities in the piedmont section of the Carolina is to be gin shortly and that the project will surely be consumated in- the near future. The State Council of the Jr. O U. A. M., is in session at Wil mington today. A large delega tfon from Salisbnry went dowi:. Senator Overman, of Winona No. 18, will be present and address the body. A convention of the Odd Fel lows of the 13th district will be held with the Smith Grove Lodge on beptember 14th and loth. An interesting prcgram has been ar ranged for the oocasion. Joho Freeze, aged 84 years, died at his houie in Atwell Township Tuesday, August 16th, probably from the effects of a stroke of pa ralysis. He had been about in his usual health and had sit down on the piazza to rest. Some time afterwards some one of the family passed that way and found him lying on the ground in an uncon scious state. He was carried in the house and died soon there af ter without regaining conscious ness . Mr. Freeze leaves a wife and a family of splendid men and women to mourn his loss. The funeral took place last Wednes day. The Rowan County Teacher's Institute is now in session at the graded school here and will last two weeks. 68 teachers were pres ent at the opening session. W. B. Summersett, Jr., who has been in New York, N. Y., for several weeks taking a course in embalming and hygiene, has re turned a full pledged embalmer and ULdertaker. He will be con nected with the Summersett Un dertaking Co., of this city. A party of young Salisburians had a delightful picnic at St John's Mill Monday night. Rev. M. M. Kinard, pastor of St. John's E. L. Church, who has been absent on a vacation in Wes tern North Carolina, has returned to his poBt of duty. A revival service is being con ducted at the Granite Qaariy M. E. Church by R. A. Taylor, an evangelist, assisted by the pastor, Rev, T. A Stover. The 14-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Rabon, of South Main Street, died Saturday night. The funeral was conduct ed from the South Main Street Methodist Church, Rev. W. O. Davis officiating and the inter- i ment was in Chestnut Hill Ceme tery. Mr. and Mrs. Rabon hav the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement. Kluttz have gone to" Atlantic City to attend tho National Council meeting in session there. Mr. Kluttz is an ex-State Counoilor and Mrs. Kluttz is now State Councilor. G. M, Phifer, of Mecklenburg County, has just recently purchaa ed the Sam Hart place in Mount Una lownship. Ihis is one ol the best farm properties in the county and contains about 250 acres. Mr. Phifer intends to im prove the place and make his home there. A party of alleged capitalists came to Salisbury Saturday morn ing and accompanied Walter ueoige to Gold Hill where they win look over the property with the possibility of oiling up the machinery, pumping the water out of the shafts and getting things going thereabouts. Let the good work proceed there is money in it for some, one. " Alpha local, Farmers' Union, will hold its second picnio and rally at C. A. Guffy's, Saturday, September 3rd. A. C. Shuford, of Hickory, will be present and address the audience. There will be plenty of good music and cool spring water. Everybody is in vited to come. J. G. Crowder Monday purchas ed the Griffith Transfer Co., and has taken charge of the business. The Wolcott shows are doing the town of Spencer this week, A. J. Wyrick, a former citizen of Salisbury, died at Cooleemoe Saturday morning. He was 23 years old and leaves a wife and me child. His remains were brought to Salisbury, and the fu neral was held from South Main street church Sunday evening. The interment took place in Chest nut Hill cemetery. He was a splendid young man and a" mem ber of Winona Council Jr. O. U. A.. M. The big derrick at the govern ment building has been replaced by a new one and work was re sumed on the building yesterday. The damage done by the break down amounts to $800 or $1000, It is reported that the Brown Palmer Clothing Co , has increas ed its capital stock by $10,000, that the store-room is to be re painted and a larger line of goods will be handled in, the future. F. L. Palmer, of the firm, has gone north to purchase the fall stock. Ow'ng to the making of repairs on tne railroad bridge tne trains are crossing the river on a single track for the present. Jas. E. Corriher, who lives near China Grove, was in the city Monday on business . Mr. Corri her has qualified as the adminis trator upon the estate of the late Mrs. Harriett E. Correll, notice of which appears in this paper. A farmers' State convention will be at the A. M. College, Ral eigh, beginning Tuesday, August 30th and closing Thursday, Sep tember 1st. A lengthy and veiy interesting program has been ar ranged, and every farmer inter ested in advanced fafm methods should attend the convention. The college will furnish rooms free. Meals 25 cents each. Mem bars of the convention will please bring sheets, towels, and one blanket. Ask railroad agents for certificates to get reduced rates. White was employed at a camp on the Southbound near Albemarle and claims that some parties entered his house, broke open his trunk and robbed it. He went after them and shot one, it is thought fatally, with a gun. He was taken in charge by Stanly officials, but made his escape and oame to Sal isbury. The sheriff here was no tified and was on the look out for him. Deputy Krider had a de scription of White and went into Chas. Fore's pool room, where a number of Negroes were,, bjit did not recognize his man, White, however, recognized the deputy, came out, walked a piece and then began to rnn . Last Thursday evening, Gale Carver, a man much wanted by officers., of the law,was brought to Salisbury and taken to the White head-Stokes, Sanatorium for treat ment. Carver haB qttite a repu tation as a thief and was wanted for such an offense. He had been located in Big Lick Township and a deputy sheriff with some assist ants surrounded him in a barn when he made a dash for liberty. Refusing to stop some one in the party stuck a load of shot in his richt leg. This halted him and he was taken into tow by the of facers. Dr. J. F. Laton. of Albe- marie, wis called and gave bim attentiom but owing to the fact unat ne aia not improve ne was brought to Salisbury. His condi tion was such that the leg was amputated and his chances of re cbvery seem good . A Run Away Marriage. Bailes performing the ceremony. The couple left Salis bury baturday for Charlotte and their intentions vere suspected, so a message was sent to the police there to be on the watch . They were and the couple was prompt ly captured up.n their arrival. But as the young mau promised to return with the young lady, agreeing to postpone the marriage, they were released. This was at a late hour in the night, so it was decided the young lady would re main at tne Hotel till morning and Mr. McDaniel curled un on a bench till day. In the morning they got together, hired a team, drove over into South Carolina. were married, returned to Char lotte and thence to Salisbury.
