Barograph Registers 11,474 Feet Almost A Thousand Feet More Than Previous Record. Aviation Field, Los Angles, Oal., Dec2 .6. Seventy-five thous and people saw Arch Hoxe7 of the Wright team of aviators braak the world's record for altitude here today. He soared more than 2 miles into the sky, his baro graph registering 11,474 feet, or almost a thousand feet above the altitude of 10,499 feet recently attained by La Gagneux at Pan, France, , Hoxsey accomplished his feat in a 40.mile gale . Hoxsey sailed into the sky at 1 o'clock, At 2:45 bis barograph showed the greateat height, whil he soared over Venice, a seashore resort, more than 20 miles from the aviation field. Coming dtwn, he made a series of thrilling piral glides, while thousands of feet in the air. Before he came lightly to earth, the crowd wa9 on its feet cheering. He was lifted from his biplane by fellow, avia tors, who paraded up and jdown Deiore ne grauustauu, untune the intrepid flyer upon their moulders. The gale which Hoxsey and his -a brethren of the Wright camp I Parmalee and Brookins, braved successfully, wrecked Latham's beautiful Antoinette machine completely. The Frenchman was among the aviators who answered the starting gun at 1 o'clock. For 2 hours and 15 minutes he fought the wind which blew di rectly off the ocean, 6 miles from the aviation field . Greenburg, Pa., Dec. 25. Three persons are dead. 8 probably will die as the result of their injurits and 10 more are in the Westmore land hospital with painful burns, as penalty either for somebody's carelessness or somebody's ven geance while miners were holdiag a Christmas celebration at Key stone Shaft, near here late last night. The accident cccured at -the home of Miehael Wilding, while 1 he was emtertainiag a party of about 25 men and women, some of whom had come from Youngs town, 0., to Bfek .work ia the mines here . It is believed that one of the men in the party while a dance was in progress, threw a cigarette butt carelessly under the stairway of tne house. Twenty- five pounds of black mining pow der are said to have been stored therein an open can. Flames from the powder shot through tba room and the acrid smoke blinded the dancer as they broke away f r tscape.
