Pittersonlsm Annihilated. Nashville, Tenn., Jan. 23. Striking at this psychological moment today won for Editor Lake Lea of The Tennesseean, the United States Senatorship in the figkt before the Legislature over the Beat soon to be made vacant bv James B. Frazier. At one j - o'olook Monday morning, Mr. Lea said he would not allow his name to be used today at 11 a. m. Monday the Fusionists had de cided to vote solidly for one can didate, but whom they did not know. At 11 :30 they had decid edtodropB. A. Enloe, whom they had been supporting, and go to Mr. Lea, who had just given his consent to being put in the raoe. He was nominated at 12:- 30. When the last name had been called on the roll of the joint session he lacked one vote but a member who had refused to vote went into the Lsa oolumn and later two were changed, giv ing him two more than the nec essary sixty-two to elect. Mr. Lea is 32 years of age and will have the honor of ' being the 'baby" Senator and holding his first public office. McMillian polled 48 votes. Lea's election came on the elev enth ballot. When the final vote was taken the hall of Representa tive! and corridors W9re jammed with people. When it was an nounced Lea had won an animat ed scene followed. The many women vied with the men in the noiBemaking and filling the air with anything they could throw. The victory is one fcr prohibi tion and a distinct defeat to the Patterson wing of the party. Though never holding an office, Lea has been a hard . fighter for prohibition and has taken part in local fights on the side of what was usually termed the reform ers. Tortured For 15 Year by a cure-defying stomach trouble that baffled the doctor, and re sisted all remedies he tried John W. Moddlers, of Moldersville, Mich , seemed doomed . He had to sell his farm and give up work. His neighbors said, "he cant live much longer." Whatever I ate distressed me," he wrote, "till I tried Eleotric Bitters, which worked such wonders for me that I can now eat things I could not take for years. J., Jan. 28. Sev en years in State's prison was the sentence imposed upon Mrs. Caro lina fi. Martin for the part she played in the death of Ocey Snead her daughter, by Judge Ten Eyck in the court of oyer and terminer today. Mrs. Martin had pleaded non vult to man-slaughter when arraigned on an indictment charging her with morder. - The body of Ocey Snead was found in a half-fillbd bath tub in a partly famished house in East Orauge, N. J., November 29. 19G9. The indictment of Mrs, Martin, the victim's mother, Mrs, Vir ginia A. Wardlaw and Mrs. Mary W, Snead, Ocey'sauut aud mtbb er-in-law, ft r murder followed. Miss Waidlaw died in jail, Mrs. Snead faces tiial, but it is said that the indictment against her will be nolle proesed. Several times while the judge was reviewing the case Mrs. Mar tin broke in with "I am in.no cent. I never injured my daugh ter or anyone else living or dead. I am as innocent in the sight of God as you are, Judge Ten Eyck." Twice she collapsed, an at one time a recess of ten minutes had to be declared as it was fcnud necessary to carry the woman from the court room to revive her. When the sentence was pronounoed Mrs. Martin became greatly exoited, "It is not be cause I deserve it," she shreiked. "I do not deserve it. I am ab solutely innocent . " The attendants carried Mrs. Martin out of the roam in a chair in which she waB sitting. People easily -constipated dread the winter. Nothing but hard ooarse meals. No fruits, no veg etables to keep the stomach ac tive. Your best relief, your greatest friend now is Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea, the world's stomach regulator. Do it tonight. Cornelison & Cook. His Charity Knew No Social Boundaries. When Wendell PhillipB was in Boston, it was his custom to ge about in the mornings unostenta tiously from court to court and from prison to prison looking for unfortunate persons, first offend ers and those that had plainly er red from necessity, with purpose to help and rescue them. Many a young man that had started wrong found his path reveised for him and never knew whose hand was reached out to him in the dark ; and it was these ventures in practical charity, to little cele brated, that kept his purse lean and compelled him, in his own phrase, to spend his winters bat tling with snow-drifts as he tour ed the country delivering lec tures. As a general rule, in this world of ours, the men that have been the great and enduring artists have been also lovers of liberty, and the lovers of liberty have been also of a full heart of com passion, if yon are a follower of Shelly, the poet of liberty, you have no doubt paused often (uot always with undimmed eyes, very likely) above that story of Shell; at Great Marlow when he alone befriended and champioued the wretched girl that had been led astray. Note then its companion piece in the life of the orator of liberty . Going home across Boston Com mon one night Mr, Phillips was accosted by a courtezan. She looked in his face and then apolo gized for speaking to him. "You are not of my kind," she said, but for the love of Gcd give me some moMay." He stopped and talked wth her; he was not ashame, bearing in bis mind his Master and the Magdalene, to cake her arm and walk with her while he questioned her; and he ended by providing her with shel ter and employment until he had the satisfaction of seeing her emancipated and reformed. This is one incident of the kind of which we have positive reoord, but we may be sure that it was not alone in his experience Suc cess. What greater gift or blessing could one give than health and happiness. To your 'unhealthy friends give Hollister's Rooky Mountain Tea, nature's greatest remedy. Drives out disease, brings back health and happiness. You'll be surprised the good J t will do. uornelison Uoor. Jan. 27. Conn- oil Jackson was on yesterday afternoon brought to the Atlantio Coast Line relief hospital at South Rooky Mount in a most serious condition, having been struck by northbound passenger train No, 80 yesterday afternoon at a point between Benson and Four Oaks. At any rate be did not more from his position despite the warnings of the approaching train, which was moving too fast to apply brakes in time. The young man, upon au examination at the hospital here, was found to be in a most serious condition and internally injured. He died from his hurts at an early hour last night.
