Iu the House to-night Representative Y )nng, of Harnett, introduced the joint petition for the acceptance for the proposal of the railroad companies for the settlement of the interstate freight rate differ ences. It specifies that the pro posal be. accepted, with the State left free to seek any other relief as to rates not involved in the proposal as it deems wiBe. He moved immediate considera tion of the resolution, but Repre sentative Kellum, of New Ilan ever, protested and moved that it go to the Committee on Public Service Corporations. This course was pursued. Mr. Kellum says he will have a big crowd here later for a hearing on the matter. He stated on the floor of the House that a great number in all parts of the State oppose acceptance of the proposal and that people in Wilmington and all through the eastern part of the State, especially, are op posed to it. The House passed the Justice resolutions urging Congress to provide for uniform classification of freight and to ohange the law so that the exception as to the long and short-haul principle will be stricken out. A number of lo cal bills passed and the calendar is crowded with scores of others, and in fact it looks as though our law-makers will attend to about everything except that for which they were called together. Of course they will not forget to iu oreasetheir wages. B. of L to Offer Prizas in Gold. j Under date of October 1st, J. N. Maxwell, State councilor, and W. A. A bill to provide a. rail road passenger fare of two cents a mile in Norh Car olina was introduced in the House today by Clark of Pitt. Another especially notable was by Doctor Gordon of Guilford carrying $198 000 '. appropriation, the Central Hospital for the Insane at Ral eigh to have $190 000 and the Eastern Hospital for Negroes at Goldsboro, $8,000. Another wo man's building, a laboratory and $80,000 additional for mainten ance fund for the hospital here are included, the bill being urged as especially necessary. There were stirring "personal privilege" speeches elicited by the "pass-toter" publication in the morning papers, in which W. C. Dowd of Mecklenburg and Repre sentative Mintz of Wayne explain ed that theirs waB newspaper transportation and critioized Rep resentative Clark for introducing the resolution that brought the list of so-called "pass-toters." Representative Ray of Macon flayed Representative Clark as a "peanut demagogue, suoh as bad hounded him in his district with the cry of 'pas8-tote" without the least injuring him in the esti mation of his constituents. He said he had represented the South ern Railway as counsel ever since the company was organ ized, but this was in the courts and when he. came to the Legislature his hands were free to legislate in the interest of the whole people. Mr. Ray, of Macon, will find that the Scriptures say a man "cannot Berve God and mam mon." . Probably this is why some members of the legislature do not want the Bible read in the sshools.
