James Chambers and A. L. 'Lo gan, both white men and from Rowan County were arrested near Mocksville, last Sunday oharged with stealing several ooops of chickens north of Statesville. They stated their pnrposa for stealing the chickens was to dis pose of same to help support their families which were large. Both m-n were employees at the Spen cer shops and say that the shops dosing down aaooouted for them taking to stealing as a livelihood. They are in jail awaiting trial not beicg able to furnish the required $300 bond. E. B. Neive, Jr , has qualifi d for the of auditor for Rowan conn ty and an office was assigned .him in the court house Monday. The Livingston College of this oity hat rai ed the sum cf $50,000 building fu.id for the rebuilding of the girls dormitory which was destroyed by fire nmi years ago. This building and probably auoth er will be erected this year. D. A. Beaver a popular engineer of this oity announces himself a candidate for alderman from the westward. Mr. Beaver has just recently been taken in as a full fledged citizen. The city boardf o aldermen met in regular monthly session at tXe mayors office last night at 7:45. The term of the present board is drawing near a close and there will be only one more regular monthly meeting, which will be held on the first Monday in May. James, of the Fair Association has returned from Raleigh where he went in an effort to have the next live stookr associ ation hold its annual exhibit in this city. Mr. James says that nothing defiuite was done but things look favorable. Va.f at the bedside of his son has returned home again and reports his son's condition greatly improved. The trial of N. C. Roberts which was set for 10 o'olock Monday morning was not heard until Tues- day morning at that hoar at the Y, Mi 0. A., at Spencer. Easter Monday was observed in Salisbury this year, all the banks and barter shops being closed on that day Solioior Clement has returned from Asheboro where he attended Randolph Court all last week. The case of importance was one against Ernest E. Kime for the killing of Frank Garner, on March 7 h . The jury returned a verdiot of second degree murder and the man was sentenced to 80 yean in he state prison. The oaie wis one of the hardest fought in that section in many years. A protraoted meeting is on at the First Methodist Church and services are beinft held eaoh-even-tug at 8:80 and 7:80 during the present .week and perhaps longer. Mrs. Rebecca Hill, known as Granny Hill, an old lady of the St. Paul neighbot hood, 77 years 1 month and 10 days old; died Sunday morning before day ., from the effects of d ropsy . The f uDer al was held'Monday morning from St. Paul's E L. Church, Rev. M. L. Ridenhour officiating. The in terment was in the cemetery near the church. Mrs. Hill leaves five sons, George. John, Henry, Mike and James, and two daughters, Mrs. Mariah Albright and Mist Amanda Hill and a number of grandchildren a n d great-grand ohitdred to mourn, their loss. Mrs. Hill was a good woman and had many friends who will greatly re gret to learn of her death. John Miliar, who lived about a mile west of China Grove died early this morning from the effect of dropsy. The funeral will be held toworrow from the Lutheran Chapel. Rev. C. A. Brown officiat ing. Mr. Miller was a confeder ate veteran aod leaves eight sons and a daughter to mourn his death. The friends of Mrs. Bettie Mesi more, who lived on Chestnut Hill will be pained to learn ot her death which ocourred at 6 :80 last Friday morning of tuberculosis. Mrs. Mesiinore was 52 years of age and leavea to mourn her death three 'sons and three daughters. The funeral was held on Saturday morning from her-home and was conducted by Rsv. Lingle of Ha ven Lutheran Church. After the ceremony the body was laid to lest at 8t. Luke's, this oounty. The frifnds of Mrs J. C. Correll of Landis will be pained to learn of her death which occurred last Friday night. The funeral took ptaoe Saturdry from Mt. Moriah Ohurob. Th deceased leaves a husband and five children to mcurn her death besides an aged mother. Mrs. Cusan Garver of Barber died Sunday at her home in Bar ber at the age of 76 years, 5 months aud 20 days. She had lived in Rowau all her life and left to mourn her death one child, oue grandchild and six great grandchildren. ' She also leaves four nephews, J. D. Fulker, of China Grove; P. B. Garver, of China Grove ; J. L. and T. J. Gar ver of Cabarrus, also one neice su.vivee. She had been a member of the Evangelioal Lutheran Church B.no9 the age of 18 years. Many friends mourn her death.
