S'5 T'"1 MAKING MARRIED LIFE HAPPY Some Matrimonial Maxims Over Which Husband and Wife Would Do Well to Ponder. I hold fast to the private maxinv that hardly anything is unendurable if one sets up that all mankind could not give one a quite worthy mate. But there is another alleviation ; un derstanding not -only V that one is married to somebody "else, but also that somebody else is married to oneself and that it V quite as hard, for the other party. There are many excellent things to be done. , Here are a few, W. L. George writes v in the Atlantic : . 1. Do not open eacli other's let ters. (For one reason you might not like the contents. ) And try not to look liberal if you don't even glance at the address or the post mark. 2. Vary your pursuits, your con versation and your clothes. If re quired, ary your hair. 3. If you absolutely must be sin cere, let it be in private. . 4. (Especially for wives.) Find out on the honeymoon whether cry ing or swearing is the more effec tive. 5. Once a day say to, a wife, "I love you' To a husband, How strong you are!" If the latter re mark is ridiculous, say, "How clever :you are!" for everybody believes that. 6. Forgive your partner seventy times seven. . Then burn the ledger. MALE BIRTHS EXCEED FEMALE Students of Heredity Puzzled Over Sudden Change of Sex Ratio in Central America. A sudden change in fhe sex ratio among certain tribes of aborigines in Central America is noted by Hen ;ry Pittier of the bureau of plant industry, Washington, in the Jour nal of Heredity. Among the adult Tirub there are now 202 males to 326 females, but among children there are 208 boys to 167 girls. Among the Bribri there are 288 men to 369 women, but among their children there are 203 boys to 137 girls. Both of these tribes inhabit moun tain iastnesses m Costa Kica, near ;the Panama boundary. They have ibeen subjected to cruelty and op' pression almost since the Spanish conquest and are rapidly dying out. ;The sudden change in the-ratio be 'tween the sexes is difficult to account for. IN THE SUBURBS. ft, 'Aren't you on good terms with lyour relations, Mr. Smith?" "I used to be, but since I got this ; place and charged board they are ;not on good relations with my terms." - , STRANGE POLICY. "Isn't Doctor Pijlem something of a quack?" . "I believe he will use any kind of treatment he thinka might cure the ipatient." SWEET INNOCENCE. ' "Why do you hesitate about mar king me?" asked the young army .officer.' "It's just this," faltered the idear girl. ; "Yes?" ! "Would I have to live in a tent?" HEALTH CRANK. i "Have you any nice coconuts?" ' "Yes, mum. Here's one full of imilk." : "But is it sterilized?" LATEST- ANTI-POISON Bt)TTffi Warning of Danger Conveyed, oy inia Device Made by Mean of a Peculiar Odor. r American Medicine ; gives this ab count of a device to prevent aca dentai poisoning : '" r :, .... "A poison bottle, intended to give warning when opened that it con tains poison, has beep invented by, a New York doctor as his contribu tion to the effort to reduce the "num ber of deaths caused j by accidental taking of poisons, suc as 'bichloride 1 oi mercury lauieus. Jca piouu uv tie liberates a very nbtieableiodor- pvprv time it is" ODened. . In ;- the neck of the bottfe, on the inside below the cork line, is a little niche, in which rests a sack containing the smelling chemical. , j "Another " application of the, idea is the placing of such a sack ' in a niche -on the bottom of the cork. When the cork is taken out of the bottle the sack sends its odor into the air, which serves as a warning. Any druggist "can concoct the necessary smell, making it either disagreeably nasty or simply just penetrating, and no one would be likely to swallow a supposed headache tablet coming from such a bottle. "These efforts to reduce, the men ace of the fpoison bottle .deserve the hearty support of the profession, for accidental poisoning presents a seri ous and growing problem.
