James Kenneth, the infant son
of Mr. and Mrs J C Howard,
who live on the Hinkel place
near Salisbury, died Sunday
from the effects of hernia and
peritonitis produced by a fall.
The remains were taken to Ca
tawba for interment.

Ridenhohour, died in Atlanta of
blood poison Saturday night
The funeral service was held at
the home of L C Ridenhour Mon
day afternoon and the interment
was in Chestnut Hill.
Rev. Leo Kunz. lately a priest
of the Romau Catholic church in
Salisbury, died in Asheviile Fri
day Jmorning from the effects of
Brig-ht's diseases. His remains
were buried at Belmont Satur
day afternoon. He was a tipical
Roman priest and most cordially
depised by many of our people.

aied at Waxhaw, N C, last week.
He was 76 years old.

here Saturday and the tuneral
and interment took place at Con
cordia church Sunday.
Mrs. Ester Treadway Barker,
died Tuesday evening. May 15th,
from the effects of acute indiges
tion. Mrs Barker was a daught
er of John Treadway and a nat
ive of Madison county. She was
a little more than 28 years old,
resided at Mrs. Redwine's on
North M aine Street and her re
mains were taken to High Point
Ust Wednesday where the funcr
i and interment took place.
Miss Blanch Boyd, daughter
or Rev R W Boyd, at one time
superintendent of the Barium
Springs Orphanage, died at
Stuart. Va.t Friday morning.
Her remains were shipped to
barium for interment.
John Drain, colored, of East
Spencer, car-sealer for the South
ern Railway, died Friday even
ing and the .funeral was held
Sunday afternoon, the interment
being at Shady Grove Baptist

At a call meeting of the board
;of county commissioners, held
Tharsday and at which all mem
bers were present, the following
busiuess was transacted:
It was ordered that C M Hen-
deilite be given an order for two
car loads of Virginia coal at $6 00
per ton.
Chairman Hall and Superin
tendent Thomason were appoint
ed to confer with T H Knox
relative to sidewalk and hedge.
Register of Deeds J C Deaton
was authorized to go to Morgan
ton to see what could be done
regarding the application of the
county for admission of Mrs.
Victor Hodge to the State hos
nital Mr. Deaton was in Mor-
ganton Friday and succeded in
having the application favorably
passed on.
Campbell's bridge across the
Yadkin river was ordered re
paired. The sum of $1,000 was appro
priated to the State Highway
Commission, this being ten per
cent, of the amount to be appor
tioned, for this county of $11,000,
as the $1,000 will be refunded to
the county by the State Highway
Commission.
Application was made to the
board for the use of the old court
house auditorium for a concert
by the orphan class from Ox
ford orphanage and this was
cheerfully granted.
It was ordered that in place
of using the change of road as
reported by the committee, from
near J K Goodman's barn
through Mt. UHa, that said road
bo used as it now is, crossing
the railroad at the roller mill
and again beyond the station.
This- action was taken on ac
count of the stringent financial
condition of the county.
It was ordered that Messrs.
Hall, Fleming, Gray and County
Auditor Neave meet with the
county attorney, Kerr Craige,
Esq., to fix the tax rate for 1917.
It was agreed that two pigs be
purchased for each of the county
camps lo be fed on refuse from
the camp kitchens and when
kill 3d the meai be sold and pro
ceeds turned into the county
treasury.
On account of the financial con
dition of the county it was de
cided to defer the Rench s ford
bridge matter.
