SOUTHERN WHITE MAN IS NEGRO'S BEST FRIEND Bishop of Negro Race Issues Statement On Re lation of Races. Raleigh, Aug. 12.—The South is the natural home of the negro race, says Bishop E. B. Mitchell of the Church of Christ Episcopal, and the Southern white man is the negro’s best friend. This is the guiding principle of Bishop Mitchell’s church, and he is here to establish a local branch of the Modern Educational and Religious bu reau, a negro organization dedicated to improving relations between the white and negro races. In the near fu ture Joseph J. Higgs, archbishop of the church and head of the bureau, will visit Raleigh and give a series of lectures on his work. Bishop Higgs is a native of Raleigh and founder of the organization, which is national in scope. He started his work 20 years ago. Bishop Mitchell is state direct at of the bureau. He reports that the organ ization is being supported through voluntary contributions from those who are interested in racial co-opera tion. The principles of the organization which have been preached for twen ty years include the following: 1. The South is the natural nome of the negro race. 2. The Southern white man is the negro’s best friend. 3. We need to know this and to think this, to feel it and to act it. Men and women who teach otherwise are our greatest enemies—morally, physi cally, mentally, politically, agricul turally and religiousy. 4. There is no greater proof of friendship than understanding; the white man understands the negro— he taught us what we know—and when we argue that we cannot un derstand the white man and must leave for some other section, we argue non sense—300 years have made the South our natural home. 5. The negro should remember it took the white man 5,000 years tv. ar rive at his present standing ip the world. I Salisbury Business College Closes Its Summer Session Salisbury Business College will hold the closing exercises of the summer session at the school on'Friday morn ing at eleven o’clock. An interesting program has been arranged, to which the public is invited. The term just closed is in many respects outstand ing. The student body has been made up of a group of enthusiastic, wide awake young men and women, and a high type of work has been done. For a number of years Mrs. Samuel T. Carter conducted a private business school for young women, and since 1927 has owned and operated Salisbury Business College. Many of the gradu ates of this institution are now holding responsible positions in Salisbury and surrounding territory. The two teachers, Miss Virginia Jenkins and Mrs. Carter, received their training at N. C. C. W. and Colum bia University. They have not only had many years successful teaching ex perience but have also done actual rou tine office and secretarial work. The fall term will begin Tuesday, September 8, 1931. Good Little Men Have Edge On Good Big Ones Washington, Aug. 12.—The old idea that a good big man can always beat a good little one apparently is partly wrong. -_. . 1 1 .extensive tests uy tnc ± uuut nwim Service point in that direction, any way. Nearly 500 men, between 20 and 34 years old were the subjects. Tentatively, the ideal weight for strength and endurance was found to ■ be between 160 and 170 pounds. Below 170, an increase in push, pull, lifting strength, grip and lung force was recorded for each 10-pound ad vance. Over 170, the tests showed erratic results, with increases in one phase offset by losses in others. As an example, pulling strength in the 160 to 170 pounders averaged 96.9 pounds, but dropped to 91 in the ISO 189 group, while lifting capacity rose between 180 and 190. The greatest strength in all capaci ties was found in men between 67 and 68 inches tall. Strength was shown to increase up I to 30 years of age, remain fairly con stant until 5 0, then a decline began. 6. The white man brought us from a heathen state just 300 years ago, and as a result of our stay with him ■and under his direction of affairs, we are the most advanced of any dark race on earth—because of our stay with the white man. Thank God, we have fought by him and under h>s di rection in every way that spelt Ameri can liberty. 7. Let us not deceive ourselves, but be patient and not hasty. Let us stop grumbling and go to work. Let us lay down undue suspicions and be self controlled. Respect everybody and practice to the greatest degree polite ness and gratefulness to every man, and God and nature will bless us. Our idea of an optimist is the lad who thinks he can go out and find a soft job in hard times. North Carolina In the Superior Court Rowan County NOTICE OF SUMMONS CHARLES M. B. ifejgcCUBBINS, Clerk » STRICTLY CASH TOWN TURNS TO CREDIT AMID ADVERSITY Bloomfield, Neb., Aug. 12.—For three and a half years everybody in this village of 1,431 residents paid cash for everything they bought, from crack ers to coal. But that day is past, temporarily at least, because of the drought, the grasshoppers and a bank failure. Now the merchants, except the garages and chain stores, have restored the credit system. Bloomfield was going along at a prosperous clip under the strictly cash plan, Dr. P. B. Lonergan, its sponsor, said today, until the Nebraska State Bank closed and tied up more than $400,000 in deposits. Fie said he be lieved the future would have contin ued bright, despite the grasshoppers and the lack of rain, if the bank had not closed. While Bloomfield has largely return ed to its once shunned "book” busi ness, Dr. Lonergan says its merchants have not given up the system. When normalcy is restored cash in hand or in thirty days will be required, he says. There has not been enough rain to aid the crops and the grasshoppers are getting fat. UNGRATEFUL BRUIN BITES FEEDING HAND Pocatello, Idaho, Aug. 12.—Mrs. M. F. Williams, 30, labored under the il lusion that when a bear enters Yellow stone National Park he becomes, by some mysterious process, as meek and safe as a lamb. Her ideas on this subject were changed suddenly. She confidently fed a cantankerous bruin by hand the oth er day. Suddenly the beast grew angry and with one swipe of its paw raked the woman’s right forearm to the bone. Mrs. Williams was taken to Poca tello General Hospital for treatment. Read The Watchman Ads.
