Advertising Most Important Factor In Success Of Firms Advertising was the most import ant single factor in the success of those firms that have held or main tained their sales or profits despite the depression, according to a sur vey recently completed by the depart ment of commerce. The survey shows, for one thing, that a considerably larger number of business institutions are enjoying continued or increased prosperity than the average 1931 pessimist would believe, and that increased or main tained advertising has proved itself the most effective method of com batting the depression. The survey does not pretend to be exhaustive, but covers 202 manufac turing, 43 retail establishments and 10 wholesalers in 70 counties and 30 states. All of these concerns (have showed increased or maintained pro fits, and the department of commerce, feeling that it might be advantageous to business generally to know how they accomplish this feat, made the survey. The report emphasized that it does not include all businesses that have met success in 1930 and 1931 and that it eliminates those where pleasing pro fits have been the result of outside agencies. For instance, a Utah pipe manu facturer attributes higher sales to governmental stimulation of public improvements. The survey concerns itself primarily with business policies that have brought success. Eighty of the concerns questioned said that advertising was the most important reason for their success (29 of these increased their advertis ing, and 19 maintained it on a pre depression basis), and 46 gave part of the credit to increased or sus tained sales effort. These two items are included in the general classifi cation of "marketing” which was dis cussed by 254 concerns. Following are the tabulated recipes for success: Item Marketing ---25 4 increased sales force, 4; sus tained sales efforts 5- 46 Advertising Increased, 29; main tained, 19; extensive, 5; ag gressive, 5; careful, 4; reduced, 4; other, 14 _ 80 I Market resources - 80 New uses of product - 3 Management of salesmen - 10 Sales territories _ 3 Co-operation with dealers - 17 Analysis of sales cost _ 8 Expansion of foreign sales _ 4 Expansion of sales line ....... ..... 4 Improving service _ 10 Expansion of credit _ 4 Increased sales outlets - 3 Reduced prices _ 18 Other price policies _ 4 Following style trends - 4 General ___ 16 Product — Diversification, >14; specialization, 3; modifying product to appeal to customers, 17; nroduct research, 11; new products, 20; quality of prod ucts, 20; packaging, 3..__ 91 Production—Purchasing, 3 ; in stallation of modern equip ment, 14; reduction of operat ing expense, 24; reduction of overhead, 7; balanced produc tion, 9 - 39 Financial policies - 3 Other policies—Administratic — 7 Total _.416 Following are some of the com ments made in the federal report: "In many cases present success ^s attributed not so much to the pres ent or a change in policy as to past policies the soundness of which is accentuated by current business con ditions. Such instances are included, as it is believed worth while to re cognize policies which have laid a foundation of consumer confidence in the product and in the firm and which have builded a strong financial struc ture, enabling the concerns to with stand the effects of a depression and to make the now less expensive ad ditions and renewals to plant and machinery. "Increased sales efforts and ad vertising policies are the most im portant reasons giver, by firms for their success. "Market research, reduced prices, co-operation with dealers, improve ment of service and management of salesmen occupy a prominent posi tion in the n arketing program of the companies. "Of scarcely less importance are the policies dealing with new prod ucts and quality, research diversifi cation and modification. In their production policies firms have fo cussed most of their attention on re duction of operation expenses and the installation of modern equipment. "More firms, 80 in number, made statements concerning their adver tising policies than any other single topic, which indicates the impor tance attached to the value of ad vertising by these successful com panies. Thirty-three industrials are represented by these firms, and the most heavily represented are candy, clothing, food, heating equipment machinery and refrigerator. "Eight firms whose advertising policies have been given as an im portant reason for success are in cluded in a miscellaneous group. A manufacturer of dresses, by contin uing to advertise when others cur tailed, profited greatly by tjiie in crease nublicity value. A producer of industrial products increased 'his rea son why’ copy. An electric clock company reduced national advertising, but increased greatly publicity at the noint of sale by newspapers, window and counter displays.” NOTICE TO CREDITORS Having qualil.ed as Administrators of the estate of G.
