- -- .■ - - __k-—-r---:—— May Control Plant L___ INSECTS CAUSE BIG DAMAGE IN EARLY GARDENS - i Stomach Poisons Will Not Suffice Since These In sects Pierce Outer Tis sues And Suck Juices From Within. BY C. H. BRANNON. North Carolina State College. Plant lice, or aphids, cause wide spread damage to early garden vege tables such as turnips, mustard, rad ishes, potatoes, melons, cabbage, ruta bagas, spinach, cantaloupes, cucum bers and many other vegetables, flow ers and fruits. These pests cannot be controlled by lead arsenate, calcium arsenate, mag nesium arsenate or Paris green, or any other stomach poison, since the insects force their sharp beaks through the outside tissue and suck the juices from within. Plant lice must, therefore, be controlled by applying a spray or dust which kills by coming in contact with the body of the insect. They usually collect on the under side of leaves and on stems and shoots. Often the leaves of a plant are so curled as a result of the attack of plant lice that a spray cannot reach the in sects. In this case a dust should be used. A contact insecticide must be used as plant lice suck the juices from within as described above. The effec tiveness of a contact control depends upon thoroughness of application. Nicotine dust is prepared by mixing 40 per cent nicotine sulphate with hy drated lime as follows: Formula—40 per cent nicotine sul phate, 3 pints; Hydrate lime SO pounds. ror smaller amounts use the same proportions in smaller quantities. Put the lime in a barrel. Pour on ■ top of the lime the nicotine sulphate. Place a few bricks and rocks in the 1 barfel. Place a cover over the barrel and ; roll or shake the barrel for five min utes. ■ -■ Pour the powdered dust into a box' through a screen which catches the bricks or rocks. Do not allow the nicotine-lime dust to stand more than 48 hours before use. A flour sifter may be used for pre paring small quantities of nicotine dust. For full grown truck crops use nic otine dust at the rate of 3 5 to 40 pounds per acre. In treatment of small areas use about 1 pound of dust to a 2 5 foot row. Very small plants will re quire only half this amount per acre. Use nicotine dust when the tempera ture is above 70 degrees F., when the plants are dry and when the air is calm. Good spray formulas are as follows: Small amounts: 40 per cent Nico tine sulphate, 1 teaspoonful; soap, 1 inch cube; water, 1 gallon. Large amounts: 40 per cent Nico tine sulphate, 3-8 pint or 6 fluid ounc es; soap, 4 pounds; water, 50 gallons. The soap should first be dissolved in a small quantity of hot water, then water added to make the regular amount of spray, then the nicotine sul phate is added. The plant lice must be wetted by the spray. Use enough spray for thorough application. When plant lice are found, do not wait to see if they are going to in crease. Make application as soon as pos sible. Hand guns for dusting and small air pressure sprayers for spraying are suitable. Large machines can be used on big acreage. Additional applications should be made if the plant lice again become numerous. Woman Rescues Dogs In Quarry St. Louis—"It had to be done and seas part of the day’s work.” In this manner Mrs. Erna Markler, nanager of the St. Louis County Hu nane Society, described her perilous •escue of two dogs from an old quarry if ter they had fallen 100 feet into the eater. Despite the danger of the rescue, drs. Markler, who weighs 83 pounds ind is about 40 years old, climbed out >n rocky ledges partly in the water and lassoed the dogs, bringing them to safety. i Extra SPECIAL Only Four Model A MAYTAG Washers (Demonstrators) j Formerly sold for $170.00 $120 See Mr. Sykes at once if you want one of these Great Maytag Values.
