MILK-FOR-HEALTH CAMPAIGN
DATES BACK TO ARMY DRAFT
Like many other educational health
movements, the Milk-for-Health cam
paign dates back to the army draft of
the World War. This physical inven
tory of a cross section of the nation’s
young manhood brought out, among
other things, the need of applying the
principles, of nutrition. Fine young
men in the prime of life were found
to have little or no physical stamina;
they were underweight and not prop
erly developed; they had unsteady
nerves and suffered from one or more
of the ill effects of malnutrition. As
a result of these findings, the first
Milk-for-Heakh campaign was con
" 1 »' •
ducted by the United States Depart-®
ment of Agriculture in 1919. Since
that time, similar campaigns have been
conducted in over 30 States, with the
result that undernourishment in school
children has been reduced about 12 per
cent and milk consumption has in
creased from 10 to 30 per cent.
While the results of the North Car
olina Milk-for-Health campaign can
not yet be ascertained, it is reasonable
to believe that a noticeable reduction
in the number of undernourished
school children will result, more than
that-—better health is anticipated for
all its citizens. Movements have been
set in motion in many of the eastern
counties where milk consumption is
lowest to increase the production of
milk and milk products; experiments
to test the value of milk as a health
food are being conducted in a number
of schools. Committees set up to func
tion during the Milk-for-Health cam
paign have been made permanent com
mittees to function throughout the
year; and educational activities in the
interest of more milk for better health
in both white and colored schools are
being continued throughout the re
mainder of the school year.
A further improvement to expect
from the Milk-for-Health campaign is
more and better milk produced not
only on the farms, but through the
dairies. Dairies will be expected to
clean up and put themselves in condi
tion with modern sanitary equipment
to produce and deliver more and bet
ter milk.
Hauls His Money
To Bank Window
In Wheelbarrow!
Colorado Springs, Col.—Asa Forbes,
local newspaper vendor, made so much
money he had to use a wheelbarrow.
Forbes recently appeared at a local
bank trundling a heavily laden wheel
barrow. He wheeled it up to the tell
er’s cage. Then he lifted three heavy
baskets to the window and started
counting the contents.
There were 40,000 pennies.
