Defer Advertising Land For Taxes
WEEK’S DELAY
IS GRANTED BY
COMMISSIONERS
Further Postponement
Would Affect Financial
Standing Of County,
Board 1^ Advised.
The county commissioners Thurs
day delayed the advertising of land
for delinquent taxes until next week.
All of the commissioners are op
posed to the advertisement and sale
of land for taxes at the present time
and hope a delay is possible. However,
O. L. Linn, temporary chairman, and
J. E. Haynes, auditor, were advised in
Raleigh Wednesday by the local gov
officials that advertisements must be
gin next week in order that a sale can
be had on the first Monday in June.
Another meeting of the board will
be held next week to definitely decide
the matter.
State officials pointed out to Com
missioner Linn and Auditor Haynes
that postponement more than a week
would be in violation of the law and
would probably affect the financial
standing of the several counties in the
state. Should the statutes be disregard
ed, it was also stated, some difficulty
in the sale of bonds might be encoun
tered in the future.
Because of the depression and the
present financial crisis, the commis
sioners hoped that the advertisement
and subsequent sale of land for taxes
could be indefinitely postponed.

Grow A Pasture
Or Quit Dairying
The most economical way to feed
dairy cows is to have a good pasture
and supplement the grazing with the
proper grain and roughage mixtures.
This is the natural way to feed cows
and to produce milk at a profit.
Either have a pasture or quit dairy
ing.
In this way does A. C. Kdmrey,
dairy extension specialists at State
College, stress the value of having a
plentiful supply of nutritious graz
ing for milk producing cows. Dairy
men have attempted from time to
time to keep cows in unnatural con
ditions. But the wise dairyman assists
nature by supplying an abundance of
luxuriant and tender grass during as
many months of the year as possible.
17-Year Locusts
Appear Here Soon;
Visit Is Explained
North Carolinians in May and June
will be able to observe one of the
most phenomenal happenings in the in

makes its periodical appearance, Dr.
2. P. Metcalf, of N. C. State college,
said.
The sound of unusually loud, gusty
and insistent singing of thousands of
insects in the woods will herald the
emergence of the insects.
This month, Dr. Metcalf said, lo
custs or cicadas will appear in the trees

Albemarle—Here’s something back
ed up by the word of Dr. J. A. Allen
of New London, as well as by several
Albemarle residents who have made
special trips of inspection. It’s a calf
having a tongue that is perfectly nor
mal in every respect, save that one
half of it is black as it is possible for
anything to be, while the other half
is almost pure white. This unusual
tongued calf was born a few days ago
in the herd owned by Dr. Allen at
New London.
Most of us think we have several
"inalienable rights” which we have
never been allowed to exercise.
of this state from eggs which were
laid in the limbs of forest trees in
1915. In 1915 the eggs hatched into
very tiny grubs, which crawled into
the soil and attached themselves to
the roots of trees where they have
been living since. Fully grown, the
locusts will emerge from the ground
in countless thousands within the next
two months.
Careful records kept since the ear
liest days of North Carolina history
record the regular visitations of the
17-year locusts. There is also a species
of 13-year cicada and there are nine
broods of the 17-year variety appear
ing in this state in different .years.
The brood due to emerge this year,
however, is the most regular and the
largest listed.
No great damage will be done by
the insects, Dr. Metcalf said.
The locusts cannot sting or injure
people. The principal damage they do
is to lay eggs in the terminal branch
es of forest trees.

Tve learned a way to slenderize—
You simply cannot beat it,
And for the gal who needs most
1 gladly will repeat it:
Cook what you will—but always let
The other fellow eat it l
HARD - HEARTED as it may
sound, the woman who wants
to keep slender is either
going to have to deprive her family
of the good things they want and
are entitled to, or she is going to
have to sit by and watch them eat
the goodies she cooks. This latter
plan certainly takes will-power but
a slimmer figure is the reward, and
It is not so hard once one makes up
her mind. And there are still plenty
of good things one may eat while
the program is on.
For instance, a juicy steak, eaten
with salad, vegetables and dry toast
two or three times a week, will con
tract rather than expand the fem
inine waist-line, according to one of
the world’s foremost authorities on
beauty, Mme. Helena Rubinstein,
and goodness knows every woman
wants a slim waistline these days.
Here are four rules for a healthful
yet slenderizing diet which Mme.
Rubinstein offers:
1. Relax and rest digestive organs
by going on a one-food diet of orange
juice or baked potatoes or grapes for
3 or 4 days every 6 or 7 weeks.
2. Eat three meals a day if you are
accustomed to that many, but ab
stain from over-generous or second
helpings.
3. Drink plenty of water—at least
10 glasses a day, but never with
meals.
4. Reduce starches, sugars, and
fats in your diet and introduce in
creased quantities of fruits and vege
tables.
Do you think y can stick te
these?
Here is a suggested luncheon dish
that is satisfying and appetizing but
not weight-accumulating: Chop one
eating apple, leaving on the skin,
and one stalk of celery. Season.
Mix with two tablespoons full of
mayonnaise made with mineral oil,
instead of olive or vegetable oil, and
lemon juice instead of vinegar.
Sprinkle half a tablespoonful of
chopped nuts over the top and
serve on lettuce. Serve with rye
crisp or wheat biscuits.
If you must have coffee, learn ie
drink it without cream or sugar.
