ENGLISH JUDGE RULES HUSBAND MAY BOSS WIFE Dudley, Eng.—English wives have no right to say where they will live. A Dudley judge handed down this decision when Mary S. Jenkinson ap plied for separate maintenance because her husband had lived in Scotland for the last four years. Mrs. Jenkinson said she was willing to live in Dudley with her husband but she did not want to go to Scot land. "It is not for you to say where you are going to live,” declared the judge. "You must live where your husband decides.” Students’ Favorites Are Detective Yarns _ Stanford University—What do the college students of today read? DANIELS URGES LAND BUYING AS AN INVESTMENT Raleigh Publisher Declar es Man Who Buys Land Now Is Making A Wise Investment. “The man who has money and buys land at present prices is going to make a wise investment,” declared Josephus Daniels, Raleigh publisher and form er secretary of the navy. Mr. Daniels’ statement was prompted by the cur rent general tendencies to "look to the land” as a solution of the present economic stress. “The mud-sill of all property,” Mr. Daniels said, “is the land. Every fac tory and every railroad must, like Anteus of old, firmly fix itself to the land. The prostration in prices of crops, largely due to the loss of for eign markets, contributed to the pres ent drop in tobacco prices, but the nation-wide depression has struck down other species of property, as well as land. In fact, those who put their money in the stocks of corporations, which had excessive issues, have suf fered quite as much as the owners of land, though, of course, they have es caped continued payment of taxes, which has borne heavily upon land. in tne panic ot tne early nineties when cotton was bringing four and five cents a pound, agricultural land went down to a very low level. Most people with money declined to buy it. At that time the late Senator Matt W. Ransom, ambassador to Mexico, seeing the conditions and having faith in the restoration of land values, in vested every cent he could save and obtain in buying cotton land in Northampton county. He became one of the largest land owners in the south. Within a comparatively few years af ter his purchases, the value of these lands rose so that if his heirs had sold at the prevailing price in 1917-18 they would have been independently rich. "I do not predict any return of val ues such as prevailed during war time, but reduction of land tax is essential for the upward trend. But I have faith in North Carolina. That is another way of saying that I have faith in the land of the state. Men who have mon ey who wisely invest it at the pre vailing prices will undoubtedly reap rich returns.” GOLD HILL ITEMS Farmers are very busy finishing planting, and some have gone to cul tivating their crops. The annual footwashing was held at Flat Creek Baptist church Sunday morning. A large gathering attended the footwashing, but not very many took part in the washing of their feet, as the membership is not very large at present. Mr. Reid and Mr. Price Parker re cently purchased new Chevrolet cars. Ralph Shaver of New Zion church has returned home after teaching through the winter and spring. Mr. Shaver is a graduate of Mitchell Home High school, and Catawba college, Salisbury. P. H. Wagoner and family spent a few hours in the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Barrier near Misenheimer Springs, Sunday. Mrs. Barrier, who has been ill for some time, is not ex pend to live much longer. Mrs. L. H. Eller, of near Duke ville, visited her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wagoner, Sun day, and also other relatives in Stan ly county. WRITER FACES SUIT ON TAXES Berlin—Prosecution of Erich Maria Remarque, author of "All Quiet on the Western Front,” for alleged eva sion of income tax laws is threatened by German officials. It is asserted that not only has the author failed to de clare his actual earnings on his books and the movie rights but has sequest ere 1 the money in foreign countries in violation of the "capital flight” de crees. One bank account of Remarque’s aggregating $5,000 has been confis cated, although the authorities allege his profits from his writings have brought him not less than 4,000,000 marks (roughly $1,000,000). jl The nationalist newspapers in Ger many are making much of the case because they were bitter in their de nunciation of "All Quiet on the West ern Front” as "an insult to the Ger man soldier.” They are assailing him also as favoring residence in a foreign country to his own homeland. I Lowell Thomas, world traveler, au thor and radio speaker, bought a Mal acca stick at Tiffany’s in New York, and then had it stolen while in Mal acca. i v i COMFORT for COLICKY BABIES . . . THROUGH CASTORIA’S GENTLE REGULATION The best way to prevent colic, doctors say, is to avoid gas in stomach and bowels by keeping the entire intestinal tract open, free from waste. But remember this: a tiny baby’s tender little organs cannot stand harsh treatment. They must be gently urged. This is just the time Castoria can help most. Castoria, you know, is made specially for babies and children. It is a pure vegetable preparation, perfectly harmless. It contains no harsh drugs, no narcotics. For years it has helped mothers through trying times with colicky babies and children suffering with digestive upsets, colds and fever. Keep genuine Castoria on hand, with the name: CASTORIA There is less to worry about after the worsit has happened than there was before. The trouble with candidate is when they throw their hats in the ring they seam to lose their heads, too. --Drastic Clearance ALL TIRES 10 TO 20 per cent OFF! 10 DAYS ON LY !
