'Famous Ferguson Case’ Comes To Victory Monday-Tuesday Will a genuinely realistic newspa per picture ever be made? They’ve been asking that for years; and now from Hollywood comes word that the trick has been turned at last. The picture that is said to meet all the requirements is "The Famous Fer guson Case,” which was finished not long ago at the First National studios. Joan Blondell is the star of "The Famous Ferguson Case,” which is said to present a highly vivid panorama of a crime of nation-wide notoriety —the sort of crime that is blazoned in the front-page headlines of even the most conservative newspapers. NIEL Salisbury’s newly enlarged postof fice is all that any city could ask but there are two small conveniences that might be added 'that would appeal very much to the patrons of the of fice. One would be of special conven ience to the bo holders in the tiers along Church street who use the Church street entrance to get 'to their boes. This would be a drop letter slit about midway of the long foyer. As it is now a patron entering the build ing from the Church street side and having letters to mail has to walk all the way around to the front of the building. The other suggestion is that a package slit similar to that in the old building be installed. As it is now when the windows are closed there is .no place for packages too large to be pushed through the. letter slits. These suggestions are passed on to Postmaster Peacock and it is hoped will be in vestigated as to the possibility of their installation. The Salisbury Chamber of Com merce has accepted the suggestion and request of the mayor and city coun cil to list vacant lots in and near the city that may be tendered to the un employed to be used as garden plats. Also to act as a clearing house to con tact those wanting to plant such gar dens and to procure for them the seed. Although the matter was acted up on by the city council at its meeting Triday and due publicity given, at this writing not a single owner of a lot has telephoned in offering the ■same for use not has an application been made by an unemployed person •to be furnished with such a lot and the seeds with which to plant it. The suggestion made at the meet ing of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce last week that Main street be marked into lanes to epedite traffic and insure further safety will likely have consideration at the meeting of the mayor and city council soon, Mayor Hedrick having written the executive secretary of the chamber of commerce that the coun cil will be very glad to consider and •co-poerate in the matter. The sugges tion of the lanes was for the purpose of providing a passing space along the street car tracks, traffic to use the right hand lane except when passing ,to the left of a car. This regulation would have one effect that would prove convenient if nothing else. It would break up the abominable habit some motorists have of double park ing along Main street. The city schools are losing a com petent superintendent, Salisbury is losing a splendid citizen and the oBard of Directors of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce is losing a valued mem ber in the departure of E. J. Coltrane to his new field of activity. Mr. Col trane was elected to the Board of Di rectors of the Chamber of Commerce in March and had already proved his •worth. He will take with him to Washington, D. C., a full measure of •good wishes for his every success in the future. Piedmont Highway Association Em blems, the Indian arrow head sur mounted by a buffalo, are becoming igreatly in evidence along U. S. 29 ■and quite a number have been sub scribed for by Salisbury filling sta tions, garages, hotels, etc., thereby ■showing their interest in the efforts ■of the association to widely advertise ■this great north and south artery of ■travel—"The Main Street of the South.” The season for auto trips is at hand and information on routes, road con ditions, etc., can be had from the ■Chamber of Commerce.
