IDENTIFY FRENCH ASSASSIN The man who shot and killed Paul Doumer, president of France was last week identified as a man named Zol otanes, a former commissar of Soviet Russia. The assassin insists his name is Paul Gorgulov. a President Shot! Paul Doumer, President of France, who was killed by a Russian lunatic. He was 75 years old, son of a railroad worker, and had been President only one year LABOR NEWS By F. T. CORNELIUS, Secretary Salisbury-Spencer Central Labor Union Relief or Revolt The possibility of a revolt among the workers unless the United States does something tangible and quickly to mitigate unemployment distress was stressed by Edward F. McGrady, spokesman for the American Federa tion of Labor, before the Senate Man ufacturers Committee in the hearing on Senator Costigan’s bill to provide $500,000,000 for Federal jobless re lief in the form of advances to States and municipalities. The money would be raised by a bond issue. Mr. McGrady emphasized the fact that there is serious unrest among all classes of the laboring people, and de clared that 70 per cent of the time of the meetings of labor organizations is taken up denouncing those who can but who will not give relief. "If something is not done and star vation is going to continue and per haps increase,” he said, "the doors to revolution are going to be thrown wide open, and the leaders of the country ought to know it.” me administration snouia Know that more than balancing the budget is needed. Bread and butter is need ed, we want to get it through work but if we can’t do that we are going to get it anyway.” Labor leaders, de clared Mr. McGrady, have lost their patience with the Government’s fail ure to provide relief. The unemploy ment situation is worse than at any time he said, and issued the warning that next winter would be more se rious than last. A number of uprisings in industrial cities have been tossed off by saying they were led by communists,” he continued, "but most of those people know nothing of communism. What they wanted was bread. In reply to questioning by Senator Cutting of New Mexico, Mr. McGrady told the committee that if congress adjourns without doing something to provide work or without providing food un til work could be made available, he personally would do nothing to close the doors of revolt. "I have been in seventeen states in recent weeks,” he continued, "and have addressed tens and tens of thousands of hungry men and women who want to know why this condition is allow ed to go on. "I personally will not come before Congress again to beg for relief. We have come to the end of our patience.” Merchants Support Labor The Black Diamond Grocers Asso ciation of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., pledged their co-operation and support to the organized labor movement in that city. The association is composed of independent grocers whose members operate around 200 stores. The asso ciation will favor local manufactur ers products wherever possible and give union made merchandise prefer^ ence over produducts of unfair manu facturers. noovervme colony Hooverville, located on the banks of the Mississippi, near St. Louis, and said to be the largest depression colony in the United States, has blossomed out with its own newspaper. “The Hooverville News,” publish ed by unemployed colonists, devotes four pages to items dealing with the community, consisting of 1,500 men, women and children. In text and ap pearance it compares favorably with the average weekly newspaper. Back On Air After a lapse of some time the Char lotte Central ^.abor Union is again sponsoring a radio program over W.
