WATCH FOR 17-YEAR LOCUST AND REPORT
ALL OBSERVATIONS TO ENTOMOLOGIST
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, RALEIGH
Entomologists of the State Depart
ment of Agriculture at Raleigh are
unusually anxious to know when and
where the seventeen-year cicadas are
seen and heard in the next few weeks
in the State, says Dr. R. W. Leiby,
Chief of the Division of Entomology.
This brood of cicadas, falsely known
as the 17-year locust, was known to
be present in the single county of
Henderson the last time it was due
to make its appearance which was in
1915. In 1898 however, it was record
ed in twelve counties in the moun
tains, nine counties in the piedmont
and four counties in the coastal plain
section of the State.
Entomologists all over the United
States are anxiously waiting for rec
ords of the cicadas’ appearance this
year, says Dr. Leiby, because they re
gard North Carolina as a key state in
distinguishing the 17-year and the 13
year broods of these unusual six-foot
ed creatures.
he cicadas are not expected to do
any damage except perhaps to young
apple orchards. They are due to ap- i
pear any day. They are recognized
first by the unusual "singing” noise
in a wooded area which may be mis
taken for the breeding chorus of an
assemblage of toads.
