BOY ENDS LIFF
IN HIRED PLANE
HIGH OVER CITY
Draws Sawed-Off Rifle
As Ship Circles; Fires
Bullet Into Head Before
Eyes Of Pilot.
Chicago—Soaring above the Mu
nicipal Airport in a sight-seeing plane,
an 18-year-old messenger boy whose
dream to become an aviator had been
thwarted shot and fatally wounded
himself the other day before the eyes
of the pilot.
A note in his pocket told of his
failure to realize his ambition and
added:
"I wanted to die happy. That’s why
I did it in a plane.”
The youth was Ernest J. Lengyel,
Forest Park.
The pilot, to whom he had paid $3
for the ride, is William Dally, Jr.,
1741 N. Hoyne Ave. Dally said:
"There was nothing unusual about
him except that when I offered him
a helmet and goggles, he retused them
and produced some of his own. I
thought that was rather strange.”
That poor equipment was the sym
bol of young Lengyel’s dream.
Before they started the boy asked
Dally to "go through some stunts”
while they were aloft, but the pilot
refused.
Langyel was strapped in the front
cockpit of a little red biplane as they
took off. Dally was at the controls
in the rear. For perhaps 15 minutes
they soared above the city, then turn
ed back to the airport.
Dally brought the plane lower and
began circling and idling his motor
preparatory to landing. His young
passenger turned around and asked:
"Going to land?”
Dally nodded and turned his at
tention to handling the plane, then
only a few hundred feet above the
earth. Suddenly Lengyel pulled from
under his coat a .22-caliber rifle with
barrel and stock sawed off.
The sound of the shot attracted
Daily’s attention. He swopped the ma
chine to the earth and ran it up be
side the National Guard hangar,
where an ambulance is kept waiting.

Hospital, where he died within an
hour.
The note, addressed to Lengyel’s
sister, Helen, reads:
"I was too anxious to wait for bet
ter times. After trying the Army and
the Navy and they rejecting me, which
was my only chance to get into avia
tion, I tried for a job at the airport
—to learn to fly that way.”
The youth’s father, Joseph, a re
tired tailor, said that his son’s ambi
tion had been denied because he was
almost blind in one eye.
