Fifth Week Poll Gives Roosevelt Margin Hoover Lags Behind As Vote Grows Interesting Study Of Electoral Col lege Votes Made Based On Straw Ballots Twenty-Eight Roosevelt States Would Net Him Total of 288 Electoral Votes The fifth revised tabulation of the nation-wide Presidential poll of the Hearst morning, evening and Sun day newspapers indicates 'that Gover nor Roosevelt is still far in; the lead. A trifle over 59 per cent of the straw votes returned go to the democratic nominee, while President Hoover’s ballots amount 'to a fraction 'over 40 per cent. It is interesting to note that more men have voted in the poll for Gov ernor Roosevelt than the combined vote of both men and women voting for Mr. Hoover. This will be seen from the following summary: Koosevelt I Men - 82,813 votes Women _, 30,480 votes Roosevelt - ,'1J3,293 Hoover Men _ 53,072 votes Women _ 25,229 votes Hoover -78,301 The fifth tabulation state by state is given as follows: State Hoover Roosevelt Alabama - 174 1,561 Arizona - 309 692 Arkansas ----— 254 946 California _ 4,968 11,185 Colorado - 1,609 1,590 Connecticutt - 2,601 1,629 Delaware _ 486 5 36 Florida _ 44 1,517 Georgia _ 23 5 2,076 Idaho _ 590 78 5 Illinois _ 4;,420 6,917 Indiana _ 3,687 4,334 Iowa _ 1,713 2,134' Kansas _ 2,095 1,979 Kentucky '- 2,5 34 4,656 Louisana - 151 932 Maine,-—— 1,073 67 X Maryland _ 82$ 1,961 Massachusetts - 3,696 1,756 Michigan _ 3,608 3,934 Minnesota _ 1,591 2,222 Mississippi- 73 867 Missouri___ 2,609 4,030 Montana _ 844 977 Nebraska _ 943 1,597 Nevada _,_ 102’ 257 N. Virginia _ 1,75 5 '2,734 Wisconsin _ 1,825 3,5 58 Wyoming _ 232 281 Total _*_ 78,3J)1 113,283 The above tabulation indicates that the Hearst straw votes are blow ing Governor Roosevelt’s way in 37 states, while they favor President Hoover in 11 states. However, in a number of states the results are close. The Hoover majorities in Colorado, Kansas, New Jersey, New York and Ohio are extremely close. Cut of 19,501 votes tabulated from the state of New York, Mr. Hoover has a bare majority of only 17 bal lots. On the other hand, the Roose velt majorities in Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, ' Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wyoming are correspondingly close. Mr. Hoover has "safe” majorities in Connecticutt, Maine, Massachusetts, Ntw Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, while the remaining 28 states appear to be giving Governor Roosevelt very substantial majorities. A tabulation of the various group ings above give the following iifter esting results: The 28 Roosevelt states have a combined tlectoral vote of 288. The 9 Rosevelt states, where the vote is close enough to place them in the "doubtful” column, have 98 votes in the electoral college. The six "safe” Hoover stated, all of which are in New Englaand, have 41 votes. The 5 Hoover states, where the vote is ertremely close, have 104 votes. Should Mr. Hoover carry all of New England, including Maine which weiit Democratic last Monday, and all of the doubtfull states he would receive 243 electoral votes. This would fall short of assuring his elec tion by 23 vqtes, 266 being neces sary. Should Governor Roosevelt carry the 28 states, where he has a clear cut straw vote majority in the above mentioned poll, he will have 23 votes more than are needed to win the election. Moreover, if he carries all of these and any part of these states classified as "doubtful” he may have such a landslide as swept Hoov er in the White House four years ago.
