Good Farm Seeds Are Essential To Success . Heavy Loss From Poor Seed Felt Plant And Animal Breeder Utilize The Same Natural Laws. Farmers Constantly Victimized By Some Seed Sellers If we are ever to secure maximum results in the production of quantity, quality and money value for all of our agricultural crops, we must de vise ways and means of continuously making available to all crop produc ers the best and' latest scientific re sults of that small body of trained men who are constantly working to discover and propagate more useful and profitable strains of commercial plants. Valuable new varieties or strains cannot be effectively and quickly dis tributed throughout the agricultural field by the plant breeders themsel ves. In the first place, the supply of the newest and best strains is usually too small and the advertising cost too great to reach more than a few thou sand growers. Then, the breeder must do scientific work on a large scale and grow the seed of thousands of individual plants in separate plant to-rows if their work is to have con stant and increasing value, and the great expense of this requires them to price their new strains of seed at several times the cost of normally good planting seed. The plant breeder and the animal breeder both utilize the same natural laws and it has always seemed strange to me that the work of the animal breeder is so much more generally appreciated than that of the plant breeder, whereas in our section plant breeding is far more important than animal breeding. Outstanding ani mals, which have demonstrated their ability to produce the highest quali ties of the breed, haVe sometimes sold at one hundred times the price that ordinary individuals of the same breed would bring. But it has al ways been difficult for plant breeders to get three or four times the price of ordinary seed for their new pedi greed strains, which have cost years of effort and thousands of dollars to produce and will in some instances more than double the profits of the farmers. Loss From Poor Seed The farmers are constantly being victimized by some seedsmen. Not a year passes that we do not hear of losses of many thousands of dollars by farmers who buy from seed cat alogs without adequate knowledge of the characters of the seed they pur chase. Take wheat, for instance; a large proportion of the varieties ad vertised by seedsmen are ndt adapted to North and South Carolina. A few years ago a wheat called Kan-Red was introduced quite extensively in North Carolina and proved to be a total failure although it had done excellently in Kansas. I know a far mer who planted 50 acres of wheat last fall from seed bought from a general seedsman. He wrote me that it was almost a total failure. His loss on the crop must have approximated $1,000. ELABORATE FABRICS MAKE EVENING GOWNS Paris.—Broche (worked) fabrics are novelties in this year’s winter evening mode. Black failes embroid ered in silver triangles or quarter sized dots and white mousselines stripped with silver are used for many smart dance frocks. Most of the gowns fashioned from these elaboart fabrics are simple in design with close fitting bodies and full skirt.
