J. FRANK PHIFER
The funeral of J. Frank Phifer,
73 year old farmer, was held at
Third Creek Presbyterian Church
September 27th, services being con
ducted by the pastor, Rev. E. D.
Brown. A large crowd was pre
sent.
Mr. Phifer was a life long mem
ber of Third Creek Church and
also a member of the Grange. He
was one of Scotch Irish Township’s
best known and most substantial
citizens, having lived his entire life
on the farm he died on.
He leaves one brother, R. W.
Prifer; two sisters, Mrs. J. A.
Gaither and Mrs. Tom Hall; and
four children, J. W. and D. B.
Phifer, Mrs. H. O. Steele, and Mrs.
Allan Hall, all of Sctoch Irish
Township.

CHALMERS WISE
The funeral of Chalmers Wise
was conducted October 4th from
the home in Steelworth. Interment
was at Chestnut Hill. Mr Wise
who was 47 years old, died at the
Rowan Gen.eral hospital after a
lingering illness.
The widow, two sons and two
daughters survive. Also his moth
er, Mrs. Louise Wise, and two
brothers, Rev. J. N. Wise of New
London and J. T. Wise of Salis
bury. Air. Wise had been employ
ed at the Spencer shops of rhe
Southern for a number of years.
AIRS. PETER BRY£E BEARD
An overdose of poisonous liquid,
taken to relieve intense physical
pain, proved fatal Monday to Mrs.
Peter Bryce Beard at her home on
West Bank Street.
Mrs. Beard was the wife of P.
B. Beard, who for many years was
a well known traveling man and
in recent years in business here,
and the mother of Bryce P. Beard,
the new state commander of the
American Legion. She had been
in ill health for a number of years.
At the time of her death her hus
band was en route home from a
fishing trip to Beaufort.
The funeral was held Tuesday
afternoon at St. Luke’s Episcopal
church.
Mrs. Beard was a native of Sal
isbury, being a daughter of the
late Alexander Parker.

Woods of North Carolina will
once more resound w'ith the baying
of the hound with the opening of
the season for hunting opossum
and raccoons with dogs and guns
on October 1, the Department of
Conservation and Development an
nounced.
Trapping season, however, it
was pointed out wlli not open un
til 45 days later on November 15.
Furbearing aanimals which may be
taken with traps beginning with
the middle of the eleventh month
include mink, muskrat, otter, rac
coon, and opossum.
The season for hunting opos
sums and raccoons with dog and
gun will be the third in the series
of seasons which have opened this
fall. The first was for squirrels,
doves, rails and gallinules (except
oot) on September 1.
Fifteen days after the hunting
lid was pried off the first open
periods deer season began in East
ern North Carolina on September
15, but deer season will not b;
open in Western North Carolina
until November 1.
Bear hunting begins October 1
throughout the state, and extends
to January 15 in Eastern North
Carolina, but closes 15 days earlier
in Western North Carolina.
Major hunting seasons for up
land game open November 20 with
the beginning of rabbit, quail, and
turkey hunting. Dove season
which opened for the month of
September and closed with the end
of the month for 50 days also re
opens November 20.
The new 60-day waterfowl sea
son begins November 16 and ex
tends through January 15. This
will be double the shooting period
allowed last year under federal re
gulations.
