So Far Exceed Billion Has Used Third Of Total Sum Banks, Railroads, And Insurance Companies, Account For Larger Fart In its first 7 months of life, the Reconstruction Finance corpora tion lent to private enterprise and state governments more than $ 1 , 200,000,000. This grand total of its opera tions from February 2 through August 31 has been announced by the Corporation in a summary which showed banks, railroads, in surance and other financial com panies borrowed $1,118,532,969; farmers received $64,201,989; and $35,455,171 went to 25 states and one territory for relief of destitu tion. The grand total was $1, 218,190,129, or approximately one third of the $3,800,000,000 al lowed the corporation by congress. In all, 5,599 banks, railroads, etc., received 7,488 loans, while 507,632 farmers, scattered through every state save Rhode Island, borrowed an average of $126.47 each. "PI take it,’ she said "on one condition that he promise to use it within, 3 0 days.” The judg; con tinued the case. rr* cn BOYS , STEAL MAD CANINE IN IREDELL Statesville.—Theft of a mad dog was reported here recently. The story goes that two youths evidently lovers of the canine tribe picked up a spotted hound as they were riding along in a buggy on a country road and hid the- dog be neath the blankets in the buggy. Farther down the road they met an excited group, members of which asked the boys if they had seen a spotted dog. Denial was made. Information was advanced that the dog was mad. The boys exchanged glances and in one mo tion flung the dog out and dashed away in the buggy. LINCOLNTON RATE CUT Lincolnton.—The board of ald ermen slashed 20 cents fro Lin colnton’s tax rate for the fiscal year, bringing the rate down to 95 cents per $100 valuation. The rate was $1.15. RHODES SCHOLAR TO BE NAMED Durham.—North' Carolina will have the opportunity again this year of selecting a Rhodes scholar, it was announced at Duke Univer sity. Applications will be receiv ed until October 15, and the elec tion will be made in December. The student elected will enter Ox ford university, England, in Octo ber, 193 3. The Rhodes scholarship is one of the most valuable award ed, and has been held by a num ber of North; Garoliniansf from various institutions in the state. ANNUAL "WHISKEY” MARRIAGES IN ARK. Little Rock, Ark;—"Well hon ey, glad to have met you,” said the youth as he left the courtroom with his former bride recently. They were one of two couples granted annulments of their mar riages which they claimed were mistakes caused by that "devil, corn whiskey.” Revenue Of State Gains In September Revenue collections of the state of North Carolina for September this year showed a net increase of $208,747.80 over those of Septein ber, 1931, but the gain in general fund receipts is expected to be counteracted by a corresponding decrease for October. A. J. Maxwell, commissioner ol revenue, reported general fund col lections of $878 954.04 for Sep tember, compared with $290, 782.5 0 the same month a year ago, a gross increase of $488,17/1.54 due to "collections of frarjrhise taxes in September this year which werfir paid in October last year. September’s franchise collec tions totaled $605,477.00, com pared with only $37,711.69 in September, 1931. From domestic corporations, $336,656.80 was collected, and from foreign, cor porations $250,089.44. Railroad utility and bus taxes made up. the rest. Highwaay Funds Drop Highway fund collections show ed a drop of $279,423.74 this September, totaling $1,214,967.17 as compared with $1,494,390.91 last September. ,_ T. M.
