Leonard’s Jewelry Store Occupies New Quarters In occupying ic> present new location the V. H. Leonard, Jr., jewelry store is maintaining an al most unbroken record for the op eration of this character of mer cantile establishment for probably more than 100 years in the same storeroom. As far back as the old est citizen can recall or of which there is any record, this place, 115 South Main street, has been a jew elry store. It was the business home of the old and long estab lished firm of J. & H .Horah, pioneer jewelers and watch re pairers of Salisbury. Got man & Green also operated a store there and then it was a Thornton store, and later was the home of the firm of Starnes & Parker. The present owner and manager, W. H. Leonard, Jr., received his training under his father, who op erated a store on North Main street, and became proficient in every department and detail of the business. He remained with the elder Leonard until 1925 when he became partner in the former firm of Leonard & Ingle, later dispos ing of his interest to his partner. He then launched in business sole ly for himself, occupying a suite of rooms on the fifth floor of the Wallace building and in 1927 moved to the new Arcade building on West Innes street, occupying a ground floor and fitting up a mod ern store, remaining there five years and until he moved into his present location, which was ar ranged especially for the business and which is one of the most modern and prettiest jewelry stores in North Carolina. cm ot tne departments in which Mr. Leonard takes especial pride is the private diamond room, where a showing of diamonds can be made in private, and where there is a vault, with brilliant lights and everything arranged for the showing and inspection of diamonds and other precious stones, this room being devoted exclusi vely to this purpose. There is a silverware section, where hollow and flat ware is carried, in both sterling and plate patterns, and another section for the cut glass display, and a china department has been added. A complete line of watches, rings, and everything carried in a modern and up-to-date THE OWNER W. H. LEONARD JR. jewelry store is to be seen. The repair department is com plete in every respect and is in charge of Chas. H. Thorton. There is another safety in this depart ment where customers jewelry and watches are kept in safety The optical department is at the rear and is one of the best that can be provided. It is in charge of W. H. Leonard, Sr., who has had many years experience in this work. There is a beautiful lounge sec tion where customers may find a comfortable resting place, and throughout the entire store that furniture and equipment are up to-date in every respect, all har monizing and forming a most beautiful interior., The stocks have been greatly enlarged and are varied and complete. Mr. Leonard has with him, ir. addition to Mr. Thorton and W. H. Leonard, Sr., two other able assistants in the person of Claude L. Morris as salesman and Miss Helen Rainey as bookkeeper. He and his assistants invite the people of Salisbury and this entire section to visit his new store and look it over, to make an inspection trip, whether or not desiring to make purchases or have optical or repair work done. INDIAN SQUAW CHARGED WITH KILLING HUSBANDS Lanse, Mich.—A North woods priestess of Indian herb lore sits in a jail cell here facing a charge of poisoning her young third hus band, a white man, and accusa tions that she caused the deaths of two previous husbands. Squad, swarthy, Mrs. Elizabeth Ziolkowski, 60, a half breed Chip pewa, is charged with giving her 3 5-year-old husband John, several doses of a potato plant spray "to make the pains go out of his stom ach.” Indians from the two missions in this heavily timbered region and from the backwoods thronged the streets of the 20th century out post town. They talked among themselves about the mysterious deaths of the "medicine doctor’s” husbands. They gossiped about her mid night trips into the forests to gather roots for concoctions she gave to the sick. They wondered about her friends among the Chip pewas, and about her disappearan ces into the far backwoods, pre sumably to join them in mysteri ous ceremonies. The prisoner peered stoically through her glasses as woodsmen neighbors clustered around the jail. She waived preliminary exam ination on the murder charge and admitted, according to Sheriff Willian Netti, that she gave her husband several doses of arsenate of lead. RAILROAD’S BUSINESS GAINS 2,000 PER CENT It’s a whale of a difference a cent a mile makes—2000 per cent, in fact one railroad. Officials of the Aberdeen and Rockfish railroad found that since September 26 when they reduced fare from Aberdeen to Fayetteville from $1.65 to 40 cents, that pass enger business increased almost 2,000 per cent. O. F. Dempsey, traffic manager, said when the road reduced fare to one cent a mile the business was almost at a standstill. Now, he says, traffic has picked up all along the line. Mule To Cause Relocation Of State Highway A mule will probably cause the relocation of a proposed stretch of highway in a western North Caro lina county, Chairman E. B. Jcff ress said. The proposed new loca tion would have saved about 1,000 feet of construction. But it would have cut right through a man’s farm between his barn and the spring and branch where he wat ered his mule. This man insists that if this route is constructed, that the Highway Commission build a runway and gates so that his mlue can get to the branch to drink. "It looks as if we are going to have to relocate this short strip of road so that this man can get his mule to the branch without hav ing to take him across the high way every time,” Mr. Jeffress said. "Fortunately, most of the people in the community want the other route, so that every one will be satisfied. Not long ago the Highway Commission encountered a similar difficulty, except that in this in stance it was a farmer with a cow, with the highway running be tween his barn and the watering place for the cow. But in this case it was possible to route the highway around the farm, so the Highway Commission settled the matter by buying the cow from the farmer. Then, having no cow to get to water across the high way, the farmer was entirely sat isfied. "These are only one or two in stances of the thousands of pro blems we have to face in building roads or in re-routing them,” Chairman Jeffress said. "I put a gun on them and tell them to drive to the station, and they go.” Brewers Hold Meeting 4f After 17 years of inactivity the Master Browers’ Association held a meeting at Detroit, re-electing Mar cus Meagerlein of Chicago (above), their president.
