should Advertise Wood As Efficient Fuel Has No Equal In Fire Place Can Be Used In Furn ace—Cit) Folks Might Use More If Supply Was Assured. By R. W. Graeber, Extension For ester, North Carolina State College On these crisp early autumr days that we have been enjoying of late how good the wood fire in the kitchen range has felt! It ha: been so convenient on these chillv mornings to start a wood fire in the kitchen range and soon have the coffee perkin’ and also have the chill driven out of the whole house. And in addition, very shortly, warm water can be drawn at the kitchen sink, while in the oven mother has nice brown toast in the makin’. And perhaps, too, during this season of canning she is very liable to have canning operations started on the back side of the range during the breakfast period. -Now when one stops to consid er that all this cooking and heat ing is accomplished with the one wood fire unit he can appreciate all the more how efficient wood is as a range fuel, and efficiency means low cost. for the iarmer there is no more efficient fuel than wood from his own forest, and undoubtedly for many folks living in town a sub stantial saving is realized by the use of good quality wood for fuel. Particularly is this true during the autumn and spring when the fur nace is not in operation. Many a furnace fire is saved by the house heating derived from the wood fire in the kitchen range. Should Be Advertised Farmers who have wood for sale should advertise in order to com pete with other fuels which are so strongly advertised. The merits of good North Carolina herdwood as fuel should be continually empha sized by farmers and other W'ood land owner who have a surplus of fuel wood to sell. Many city folks say, "We would like to burn wood but we have no dependable supply We have no certainty of getting seasoned wood of the desired size and quality.” Farmers isn’t this J*~ cJiancc? A Jvertrisin g good, well-seasoned, graded wood of any size, undobutedly a great deal more could be sold particularly during these days when folks are inter ested in cutting down costs. Best Fireplace Fuel For these folks who really enjoy a fireplace and appreciate the cheer and coziness of a fireplace fire on frosty fall evenings there is no substitute for wood for fire place fuel. A wood fire can be so easily and quickly started and be gins generating heat so promptly. Furthermore in the use of well seasoned wood the amount of cmnlzp inrl croc ic frv o mm imum in fringing the wood to that red glowing stage that throws both heat and cheer so abundantly. And too, complete combustion is so eas ily obtained—very little formation of soot, a small amount of ash and no clinkers attend the use of wood as a fireplace fuel. All these ad vantages make wool a most desir able and efficient fuel to use in the fireplace. Can Be Used In Furnace For the average city folk who are looking for a way to reduce fuel bills these days the use of wood in the furnace presents an opportunity to accomplish this sav ing. This has been demonstrated repeatedly. Last winter a certain seven-room house was heated at a great saving almost exclusively with wood. The only other fuel used during the entire winter was a half ton of coal. The furnace (hot air) used wood very efficient ly without change of grates. It was learned, however, that it was necessary to maintain at all times a thick bed of ashes on the grate and to keep the furnace well checked. Ashes accumulated very slowly and what were produced were spread on the garden when carried out. Thoroughly seasoned wood only was used, which prac tice no doubt was largely respon sible for the almost total lack of formation of creosote in flues. Practically no shaking of the grate was done. The use of wood and coal toge ther has been tried with fairly good success. The most convenient combination of this sort was found to be the use of wood during the day and wood and coal during the night/. Although, in a Raleigh home last spring a wood fire was carried through a 3 6-hour period without attention or additional fuel. It has also been found that in burning wood in a furnace with a coal grate that the use of coal occasionally helps maintain a bed of ashes to cover the grate. It is granted that a wood fire in the furnace requires a little more attention than one using oth er fuels but the tite of good-sized cfiunkc of seasoned hardwood and proper handling of grates and drafts goes far in eliminating this objection. But for those who are ambitious to cut the family ex penses the extra amount of at tention required is a good invest ment.
